The rheological behavior of progressively shear thickening FM-9 solutions, a time-dependent shear thickening material with characteristics of threshold behavior, is investigated as part of a study of the rheological properties of antimisting jet fuel. Flammability test results and test configurations from various sources are evaluated. A correlation is obtained between the rheological behavior and the flammability tests such that, for a given system, such as a fixed solvent system and the FM-9 polymer system, the flammability criterion can be applied to a wide range of concentrations and temperatures.read more

A transition occurring in ideal elastic liquids during shear flow
Jules J. Magda,Ronald G. Larson +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the dependence of this transition on the Weissenberg number and the gap width or cone angle is consistent with a viscoelastic instability predicted by Phan-Thien for Boger fluids.

One hundred years of extensional flow
TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the literature on extensional flow is presented, starting with extracts from the seminal papers of Trouton [Proc Roy. Soc. A 77 (1906) 426-440] and Fano [Archivio di fisiologio, 5 (1908) 365-370].

Megasupramolecules for safer, cleaner fuel by end association of long telechelic polymers
Ming-Hsin Wei,Boyu Li,R. L. Ameri David,Simon C. Jones,V. Sarohia,Joel Schmitigal,Julia A. Kornfield +6 more
TL;DR: With individual building blocks short enough to avoid hydrodynamic chain scission and reversible linkages that protect covalent bonds, these megasupramolecules overcome the obstacles of shear degradation and engine incompatibility.

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics study of shear flow in soft disks
TL;DR: In this paper, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics calculations of homogeneous shear flow in two dimensions have been performed on soft disks close to the freezing transition, revealing complex phase changes and dynamical behavior during extensive shear thinning and a difference in the values of the diagonal components of the pressure tensor.

Threshold-type shear-thickening in polymeric solutions
Lionel Choplin,J. Sabatié +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, threshold-type shear-thickening has been reported in the literature for relatively complex mixtures and one of the most famous is a solution of poly(vinylalcohol) in water in which a substantial amount of sodium borate is added.

Investigation of the instability of a moving liquid film
TL;DR: In this paper, the stability of a thin layer of liquid moving in still air is studied theoretically with the object of throwing light on the break-up of films during atomization, and it is found that instability occurs if W = T/ρ 1U2h < 1 and that the wavelength for maximum growth factor, for W « 1, is λ = (4πT/ρ 2U2U2).

The effect of ambient density on drop formation in sprays
N. Dombrowski,P. C. Hooper +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the stability and disintegration of flat sheets produced by single-hole spray nozzles at various densities of the surrounding air has been made, and it is shown that a flat laminar sheet injected in vacuo is stable, and that drops are formed only at its edges.

Extensional flow of dilute polymer solutions
David F. James,John H. Saringer +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the behavior of dilute polymer solutions in sink flow, viz., radial flow toward a point, and found that the non-Newtonian normal stress developed in the radial direction; the magnitude was the same order as the Newtonian stress.

Preliminary investigation of elongational flow of dilute polymer solutions
TL;DR: In this article, a tubeless siphon apparatus has been set up to measure extensional flow, where the liquid is continuously drawn into a capillary and after steady flow has been established, the tube is raised above the liquid surface.

Rheological behavior of progressively shear-thickening solutions
TL;DR: In this paper, the rheological behavior of the recently developed polymer FM-9 in Jet A fuel and JP 8 fuel is reported, and the onset time necessary for the onset of thickening is found to depend on shear rate, solvent, concentration, and molecular weight.
