TLDR
It was observed that the optimal pH range narrows along with the temperature decrease, which means that the efficiency of the anammox process at low temperatures can be improved by correction and adequate control of pH.

A feasibility study on biological nitrogen removal (BNR) via integrated thiosulfate-driven denitratation with anammox.

TL;DR: The ratio of S2O32--S/NO3--N and pH are confirmed to be two key factors affecting the thiosulfate-driven denitratation activity and nitrite accumulation and shed light on how to operate a high rate BNR system targeting to electron donor and energy savings as well as biowastes minimization and greenhouse gas reductions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Performance, microbial community evolution and neural network modeling of single-stage nitrogen removal by partial-nitritation/anammox process

TL;DR: To ascertain whether control/prediction of the SNAP process was feasible with mathematical modeling, a novel 3-layered backpropagation-artificial-neural-network-(BANN) was developed and demonstrated high-performance as computational results revealed smaller deviations and satisfactory coefficient of determination.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of biodegradable polybutylene succinate and non-biodegradable polyvinyl chloride microplastics on anammox sludge: Performance evaluation, suppression effect and metagenomic analysis

TL;DR: Results showed that PBS and PVC MPs reduced the nitrite removal efficiency of the anammox sludge, and PVC1 (0.1 g/L PVC) group was the most significant at 19.2 %.
Journal ArticleDOI

Application of the anammox-based process for nitrogen removal from anaerobic digestion effluent: A review of treatment performance, biochemical reactions, and impact factors

TL;DR: In this paper, an overview of more than 30 reactors from published studies on AD effluent treatment via anammox-based processes is provided, including single-stage and two-stage partial nitration-anammox (PN/A) processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pilot-scale ELAN® process applied to treat primary settled urban wastewater at low temperature via partial nitritation-anammox processes

TL;DR: In this paper, a single stage partial nitritation and anammox granular pilot scale reactor (600 L) was operated to treat primary settled sewage in an urban wastewater treatment plant.

Full-scale partial nitritation/anammox experiences--an application survey

TL;DR: This work presents a summary of PN/A technologies that have been successfully developed, implemented and optimized for high-strength ammonium wastewaters with low C:N ratios and elevated temperatures and discusses the remaining obstacles.

Autotrophic growth of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing micro-organisms in a fluidized bed reactor

TL;DR: An autotrophic, synthetic medium for the enrichment of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (Anammox) micro-organisms was developed and Acetylene, phosphate and oxygen were shown to be strong inhibitors of the Anammox activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

The inhibition of the Anammox process: A review

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed review of previous researches on the inhibition of Anammox processes is presented, where the effect of inhibitory substances, such as substrates (ammonia and nitrite), organic matter (nontoxic organic matter and toxic organic matter), salts, heavy metals, phosphate and sulfide, are commonly present in the practical applications.

Microbiology and application of the anaerobic ammonium oxidation ('anammox') process.

TL;DR: Electron microscopy of the ultrastructure of B. anammoxidans has shown that several membrane-bounded compartments are present inside the cytoplasm, and Hydroxylamine oxidoreductase, a keyAnammox enzyme, is found exclusively inside one of these compartments, tentatively named the 'anammoxosome'.
Journal ArticleDOI

Enrichment and characterization of an anammox bacterium from a rotating biological contactor treating ammonium-rich leachate.

TL;DR: An anammox culture was enriched from a rotating disk contactor that was used to treat ammonium-rich leachate with low organic carbon content and formed homogenous clusters containing up to several hundred cells within an extracellular matrix that exhibited higher tolerance to phosphate and nitrite and was active at lower cell densities.
