Reducing energy and material flows in cities

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the recent literature on urban energy and material use, and their reduction potential, focusing on three aspects: the urban form, the urban building stock, and urban consumption patterns.

The influence of urban form on GHG emissions in the U.S. household sector

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the paths by which urban form influences an individual household's carbon dioxide emissions in the 125 largest urbanized areas in the U.S. They show that doubling population-weighted density is associated with a reduction in CO2 emissions from household travel and residential energy consumption by 48% and 35%, respectively.

Travel and the built environment: a synthesis

TL;DR: Elasticities of travel demand with respect to density, diversity, design, and regional accessibility are derived from selected studies and may be useful in travel forecasting and sketch planning and have already been incorporated into one sketch planning tool, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Smart Growth Index model.
