This study examines how product innovation contributes to the renewal of the firm through its dynamic and reciprocal relation with the firm's competences through field research in five high-tech firms of varying age, size, and level of diversification.
Abstract
This study examines how product innovation contributes to the renewal of the firm through its dynamic and reciprocal relation with the firm's competences Field research in five high-tech firms of varying age, size, and level of diversification is combined with analysis of existing theory to develop the findings of the study Based on the notion that new products are created by linking competences relating to technologies and customers, a typology is derived that classifies new product projects based on whether a new product can draw on existing competences, or whether it requires competences the firm does not yet have Following organizational learning theory, these options are conceptualized as exploitation and exploration These organizational learning concepts are used to gain a dynamic and path-dependent view of product innovation and firm development, and to reveal the unique nature and challenges of different types of product innovation Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

The Family Innovator's Dilemma: How Family Influence Affects the Adoption of Discontinuous Technologies by Incumbent Firms

TL;DR: In this article, the authors integrate research on family business and discontinuous change to better explain why incumbents vary in when and how they adopt discontinuous technologies, and aggregate these seemingly contradictory effects to show that, overall, discontinuity change conflicts with essential goals and values of the family system, and therefore, family influence entails fundamentally different dilemmas than those described in extant research.

The strategic fit between innovation strategies and business environment in delivering business performance

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of business environments (in terms of dynamism and competitiveness) as contingency factors which affect the effectiveness of different types of innovation strategies in delivering business performance is examined.

Customer Value Anticipation, Customer Satisfaction and Loyalty: An Empirical Examination

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on two survey studies that test using structural equation modeling the notion that suppliers good at anticipating what customers will value realize higher customer satisfaction and loyalty, with satisfaction acting as a mediator for loyalty.

Ambidexterity under scrutiny: : Exploration and exploitation via internal organization, alliances, and acquisitions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors claim that balancing these tendencies within each mode undermines firm performance because of conflicting routines, negative transfer, and limited specialization, and that by exploring in one mode and exploiting in another, a firm can avoid some of these impediments.

Aligning with new digital strategy: A dynamic capabilities approach

TL;DR: A longitudinal analysis of a B2B company's journey to enact its B2C digital strategy, using the dynamic capabilities approach, results in an aligning process model that is comprised of three phases (exploratory, building, and extending) and generalizable organizational aligning actions that form the organization's sensing, seizing, and transforming capacities.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the process of inducting theory using case studies from specifying the research questions to reaching closure, which is a process similar to hypothesis-testing research.

Dynamic capabilities and strategic management

TL;DR: The dynamic capabilities framework as mentioned in this paper analyzes the sources and methods of wealth creation and capture by private enterprise firms operating in environments of rapid technological change, and suggests that private wealth creation in regimes of rapid technology change depends in large measure on honing intemal technological, organizational, and managerial processes inside the firm.

Building theories from case study research.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors define a leadership event as a perceived segment of action whose meaning is created by the interactions of actors involved in producing it, and present a set of innovative methods for capturing and analyzing these contextually driven processes.

A Resource-Based View of the Firm

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the usefulness of analyzing firms from the resource side rather than from the product side, in analogy to entry barriers and growth-share matrices, the concepts of resource position barrier and resource-product matrices are suggested.
