TLDR
This study examines how product innovation contributes to the renewal of the firm through its dynamic and reciprocal relation with the firm's competences through field research in five high-tech firms of varying age, size, and level of diversification.
Abstract
This study examines how product innovation contributes to the renewal of the firm through its dynamic and reciprocal relation with the firm's competences Field research in five high-tech firms of varying age, size, and level of diversification is combined with analysis of existing theory to develop the findings of the study Based on the notion that new products are created by linking competences relating to technologies and customers, a typology is derived that classifies new product projects based on whether a new product can draw on existing competences, or whether it requires competences the firm does not yet have Following organizational learning theory, these options are conceptualized as exploitation and exploration These organizational learning concepts are used to gain a dynamic and path-dependent view of product innovation and firm development, and to reveal the unique nature and challenges of different types of product innovation Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

How firms learn heuristics: Uncovering missing components of organizational learning

TL;DR: This article explored how firms learn heuristics from negative outcomes and found that learning is strongly affected by whether attributions for negative outcomes are internal or external, and that formal communication influences the convergence and divergence of those attributions.

Differences in retail strategies on the emerging organic market.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the strategies of the three most important Belgian retailers that market organic products, and in particular organic beef, through interviews with the retailers' staff and through observations in retail outlets.

The liability of localness in innovation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyze differences in the innovativeness of domestic firms and subsidiaries of foreign firms operating in the same country and argue that domestic firms suffer a liability of localness in innovation, or a competitive disadvantage in product innovation relative to subsidiaries operating in foreign countries.

Network Responsiveness: The Social Structural Microfoundations of Dynamic Capabilities

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that the intra-firm network is likely to affect two firm-level outcomes: coordination and adaptability, and posit that slow network responsiveness may provide coordination advantages via compensatory fit, whereas fast network responsiveness might facilitate more rapid adaptability.

Exploration and exploitation in the development of more entrepreneurial universities: A twisting learning path model of ambidexterity

TL;DR: In this article, a systematic literature review on the development process of universities towards the entrepreneurial model is conducted to provide a conceptual framework and a strategic research agenda, and a conceptual model is developed by integrating the learning processes of exploration and exploitation to the previous theories used to analyse the entrepreneurial university.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the process of inducting theory using case studies from specifying the research questions to reaching closure, which is a process similar to hypothesis-testing research.

Dynamic capabilities and strategic management

TL;DR: The dynamic capabilities framework as mentioned in this paper analyzes the sources and methods of wealth creation and capture by private enterprise firms operating in environments of rapid technological change, and suggests that private wealth creation in regimes of rapid technology change depends in large measure on honing intemal technological, organizational, and managerial processes inside the firm.

Building theories from case study research.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors define a leadership event as a perceived segment of action whose meaning is created by the interactions of actors involved in producing it, and present a set of innovative methods for capturing and analyzing these contextually driven processes.

A Resource-Based View of the Firm

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the usefulness of analyzing firms from the resource side rather than from the product side, in analogy to entry barriers and growth-share matrices, the concepts of resource position barrier and resource-product matrices are suggested.

How do firms identify and prioritize innovation domains based on trends in customer needs?

Firms identify and prioritize innovation domains by linking competences to technologies and customers, categorizing projects as exploitation or exploration, and seeking input from new customers for competence development.
