Journal ArticleDOI

Overview: The constructive role of noise in fluctuation driven transport and stochastic resonance.

TL;DR: In this focus issue, several articles are collected that capture the flavor of noise and Brownian motion and point the way to new directions for research.
Journal ArticleDOI

On the verge of Umdeutung in Minnesota: Van Vleck and the correspondence principle. Part two

TL;DR: Van Vleck as mentioned in this paper showed that quantum formulae for emission, absorption, and dispersion of radiation merge with their classical counterparts in the limit of high quantum numbers, which is the basis for matrix mechanics.
Journal ArticleDOI

Electromagnetic force and torque in ponderable media.

TL;DR: This analysis demonstrates consistency with the conservation laws by showing that, when a beam of light enters a magnetic dielectric, a fraction of the incident linear momentum pours into the medium at a rate determined by the Abraham momentum density, E x H/c(2), and the group velocity V(g) of the electromagnetic field.

Technologies and Designs for Electronic Nanocomputers

TL;DR: An overview of the technologies and designs that presently are in development for electronic nanocomputers is provided, as well as promising directions for remedying some of the present research issues.
Journal ArticleDOI

A visco-poroelastic theory for polymeric gels

TL;DR: In this paper, a unified theoretical framework for the transient behavior of polymeric gels to account for both solvent migration and viscoelastic deformation is proposed, and the authors further develop a simple material model, and implement it into a finite-element code for numerical calculations.
