Inertial and Frictional Effects in Dynamic Compression Testing

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of macro-inertia on the observed specimen response are discussed. But the effects due to any internal structure of, for example, a foam will not be considered.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Efficiency of Molecular Motors

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the flow of energy between the molecular motors and its surroundings, in particular its efficiency, and find that the energy efficiency of molecular motors, whether the Stokes efficiency or the usual thermodynamic efficiency, is strictly less than one, because of the dissipation of the energy in both the overdamped surroundings and in the process of the chemical reaction.
Journal ArticleDOI

Psychological complexity and the cost of information processing

TL;DR: This paper suggests that psychological complexity and processing cost can be quantified using the notion of hierarchical change and discusses the relationship between change, complexity, and the Gestalt principles of perceptual organization.
Journal ArticleDOI

Productivity of "Collisions Generate Heat" for Reconciling an Energy Model with Mechanistic Reasoning: A Case Study.

TL;DR: The right instructional context can turn students' incorrect physics ideas from obstacles to learning into productive starting points for developing correct ideas as mentioned in this paper. But the right context can be difficult to find.
Journal ArticleDOI

When One Model Casts Doubt on Another: A Levels-of-Analysis Approach to Causal Discounting

TL;DR: A survey of the descriptive and formal models that attempt to explain the discounting process is provided and what current models do not account for is summarized and where room for improvement exists is summarized.
