TLDR
In this paper, the authors analyze how the innovative performance is affected by the scope, depth, and orientation of firms' external search strategies and apply this analysis to firms using STI (science, technology and innovation) and DUI (doing, using and interacting) innovation modes.

The role of openness in the fuzzy front-end of service innovation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the impact of openness competence on front-end uncertainty reduction and service innovation success and find that openness competence positively influences both the degree of uncertainty being reduced and the overall success of service innovations.

Absorptive capacity, marketing capabilities, and innovation commercialisation in Nigeria

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate how specialised capabilities including absorptive capacity and marketing capabilities influence innovation commercialisation in manufacturing and service firms in Nigeria, and they find that absorptive measures comprising openness and formal training are positively associated with innovation performance.

How do Scientists Contribute to the Performance of Innovative Start-ups? An Imprinting Perspective on Open Innovation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate how scientists contribute to the performance of innovative start-ups through an analysis of 211 Italian start-up with and without scientist founders, and find that scientists provide an advantage to innovative start-'ups to the extent that they stimulate open innovation (i.e., search breadth and depth).

Export Performance in SMEs: The Importance of External Knowledge Search Strategies and Absorptive Capacity

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the link between industrial and non-industrial knowledge search strategies and export performance, taking into account absorptive capacity (AC) as a mediating variable.
Journal ArticleDOI

How do intermediaries drive corporate innovation? A moderated mediating examination

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose and empirically test a theoretical framework for understanding the effects of intermediaries on corporate innovation performance and show that firms' ties to intermediaries can contribute to innovation by enhancing the scope of external innovation searches and reducing search costs.

A Dynamic Theory of Organizational Knowledge Creation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a paradigm for managing the dynamic aspects of organizational knowledge creating processes, arguing that organizational knowledge is created through a continuous dialogue between tacit and explicit knowledge.

Absorptive Capacity: A Review, Reconceptualization, and Extension

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify key dimensions of absorptive capacity and offer a reconceptualization of this construct, and distinguish between a firm's potential and realized capacity, and then advance a model outlining the conditions when the firm's realized capacities can differentially influence the creation and sustenance of its competitive advantage.

Q1. What have the authors contributed in "The influence of scope, depth, and orientation of external technology sources on the innovative performance of chinese firms" ?

In this study, the authors analyze how the innovative performance is affected by the scope, depth, and orientation of firms ’ external search strategies. Based on a survey among firms in China, the authors find that greater scope and depth of openness for both innovation modes improves innovative performance indicating that open innovation is also relevant beyond science and technology based innovation. Furthermore, the authors find that decreasing returns in external search strategies, suggested by Laursen and Salter ( 2006 ), are not always present and are contingent on the innovation modes. Next, the authors find that the type of external partners ( they label it “ orientation of openness ” ) is crucial in explaining innovative performance and that firms using DUI or STI innovation modes have different sets of relevant innovation partners. As respondents are located in China, this study provides evidence that open innovation is also relevant in developing countries.
