It is shown that the stathmokinetic method is a rather imprecise one for measuring the turnover time and the duration of mitosis.Abstract:
The accuracy and precision of the stathmokinetic experiment for the determination of cell birth rate are discussed from practical and theoretical viewpoints. Topics covered include the determination of the optimal dosage of the metaphase arresting agent, the times at which observations should be taken and which cells should be counted, the correct method of estimating cell birth rate and the dependence of any derived estimate of the turnover time on the age distribution of cycling cells. Failure to consider any of these points can lead to considerable inaccuracy. It is further shown that the stathmokinetic method is a rather imprecise one for measuring the turnover time and the duration of mitosis. Data are present comparing the results of using the technique with those obtained from autoradiographic studies.read more

Stimulatory effect of short-chain fatty acids on epithelial cell proliferation in the rat intestine: a possible explanation for trophic effects of fermentable fibre, gut microbes and luminal trophic factors.
TL;DR: It is concluded that SCFA are involved in the trophic effects of gut microbes, ingestion of fermentable fibre, and lumen contents and are physiological lumentrophic factors mediated by a systemic mechanism in vivo.

Regeneration and pattern formation in planarians: I. The pattern of mitosis in anterior and posterior regeneration in Dugesia (G) tigrina, and a new proposal for blastema formation
Emili Saló,Jaume Baguñà +1 more
TL;DR: The results obtained demonstrate that blastema formation in planarians occurs through mechanisms somewhat different to those shown to occur in the classical epimorphic models of regeneration, and suggest that planarian regeneration could represent an intermediate stage between morphallactic and epIMorphic modalities of regeneration.

Possible role of acetaldehyde in ethanol-related rectal cocarcinogenesis in the rat.

TL;DR: The data show that chronic ethanol ingestion accelerates chemically induced rectal carcinogenesis and raise the possibility that acetaldehyde probably generated through bacterial ethanol oxidation may be involved in this process.

Self-renewal of pulmonary alveolar macrophages: evidence from radiation chimera studies.
TL;DR: Data suggest that alveolar macrophages are a self‐renewing population under normal steady‐state conditions and are of host origin even after 45 weeks.

Androgen-supported estrogen-enhanced epithelial proliferation in the prostates of intact noble rats
TL;DR: Concomitant comparative stathmokinetic studies of the prostates of T‐treated castrates suggest that protracted androgen‐supported estrogen stimulation of the DLP is necessary to overcome factors that normally limit cell proliferation.

The mechanism of colchicine inhibition of mitosis. i. kinetics of inhibition and the binding of h3-colchicine.
TL;DR: H3-colchicine of high specific activity was prepared and based on the correlation between the time of first appearance of blocked mitoses and the radioactivity per cell, it is suggested that if a critical fraction of the sites are complexed, the cell is unable to form a functional mitotic spindle.

TL;DR: Equations are presented describing the accumulation of cells at any part of the life cycle as a result of addition of specific blocking agents, which makes possible analysis with relatively high resolution of the distribution of cells throughout thelife cycle in normal cultures or those treated with various agents.
