The neighbor-joining method and Sattath and Tversky's method are shown to be generally better than the other methods for reconstructing phylogenetic trees from evolutionary distance data.Abstract:
A new method called the neighbor-joining method is proposed for reconstructing phylogenetic trees from evolutionary distance data. The principle of this method is to find pairs of operational taxonomic units (OTUs [= neighbors]) that minimize the total branch length at each stage of clustering of OTUs starting with a starlike tree. The branch lengths as well as the topology of a parsimonious tree can quickly be obtained by using this method. Using computer simulation, we studied the efficiency of this method in obtaining the correct unrooted tree in comparison with that of five other tree-making methods: the unweighted pair group method of analysis, Farris's method, Sattath and Tversky's method, Li's method, and Tateno et al.'s modified Farris method. The new, neighbor-joining method and Sattath and Tversky's method are shown to be generally better than the other methods.read more

TL;DR: The YB1T strain, the aetiological agent of tissue lysis of the coral Pocillopora damicornis, was characterized as a novel Vibrio species on the basis of 16S rDNA sequence, DNA-DNA hybridization data, AFLP and GTG5-PCR genomic fingerprinting patterns and phenotypic properties, including the cellular fatty acid profile.

TL;DR: Threespine sticklebacks have a simple chromosomal mechanism for sex determination based on a nascent Y chromosome that is less than 10 million years old, and further analysis of the stickleback system will provide an exciting window into the evolution of sex-determination pathways and sex chromosomes in vertebrates.

TL;DR: Recognition of the procedures required to identify this and other Rochalimaea species suggests that clinical laboratories should prolong the incubation times of cultures of blood and tissue from patients with suspected endocarditis, patients with fever of unknown origin, and immunocompromised patients with Fever so that the full spectrum of disease caused by these organisms can be recognized.

Thermostable direct hemolysin gene of Vibrio parahaemolyticus : a virulence gene acquired by a marine bacterium

TL;DR: Results of these genetic studies of the tdh gene indicate that TDH is a major virulence determinant of KP-positive V. parahaemolyticus strains and that the KP- positive phenotype results from highlevelexpression ofaparticulartdhgene, which makes the KP phenotype a good marker for a virulent strain.

Molecular Evolutionary Genetics
TL;DR: Recent developments of statistical methods in molecular phylogenetics are reviewed and it is shown that the mathematical foundations of these methods are not well established, but computer simulations and empirical data indicate that currently used methods produce reasonably good phylogenetic trees when a sufficiently large number of nucleotides or amino acids are used.
