The neurobiology of PTSD: implications for nurses.
TLDR
The nursing profession has traditionally sought to explain sophisticated language to patients in understandable terms, and nurses serve in encouraging, supporting, and evaluating roles, all of which will be increasingly important as science and technology discover more information about the neurobiological basis for mental illnesses.Abstract:
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling and prevalent psychiatric disorder. Researchers and scientists have developed a neurobiological basis, which provides a framework for understanding the complexities of PTSD, for many symtoms of the disorder. The estimated lifetime prevalence of PTSD among adult Americans is 7.8%, with women twice as likely as men to have PTSD. Onset of symptoms can occur years after exposure to trauma, and the duration of the illness can last a lifetime. Patients with PTSD often encounter multiple psychosocial problems that result from the symptoms they experience, and their distorted perceptions can affect relationships within the family and the workplace. Nurses in various roles (e.g., educator, therapist, prescriber, case manager, staff nurse) may encounter individuals with PTSD. The nursing profession has traditionally sought to explain sophisticated language to patients in understandable terms, and nurses serve in encouraging, supporting, and evaluating roles, all of which will be increasingly important as science and technology discover more information about the neurobiological basis for mental illnesses.read more

BDNF Val66Met polymorphism is associated with HPA axis reactivity to psychological stress characterized by genotype and gender interactions.
Idan Shalev,Elad Lerer,Salomon Israel,Florina Uzefovsky,Inga Gritsenko,David Mankuta,Richard P. Ebstein,Richard P. Ebstein,Marsha Kaitz +8 more
TL;DR: Examination of individual responses by Genotype and Sex to a standardized social stress paradigm indicates that a common, functionally significant polymorphism in the BDNF gene modulates HPA axis reactivity and regulation during the TSST differently in men and women.

Differential patterns of HPA activity and reactivity in adult posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder.
TL;DR: The research reviewed presents the possibility of diagnostic specificity with regard to HPA function and the differential response pattern to the DST suggests that, while it cannot be considered a pure diagnostic tool, it should be one measure taken into consideration during diagnosis.

Systematic Review on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Survivors of the Wenchuan Earthquake:
Chunlan Hong,Thomas Efferth +1 more
TL;DR: A systematic overview of research during the past 6 years showed that adolescents and adults were among the most studied populations with high prevalence rates for PTSD, and the role of social support for prevalence rates of PTSD should be observed in more detail.

Negative emotion regulation in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder.
Kunlin Xiong,Ye Zhang,Mingguo Qiu,Jingna Zhang,Linqiong Sang,Li Wang,Bing Xie,Jian Wang,Min Li +8 more
TL;DR: Trauma exposure might impair the ability to down-regulate negative emotion, and the present findings will improve the understanding of the neural mechanisms of emotion regulation underlying PTSD.

Posttraumatic stress disorder in the National Comorbidity Survey.
TL;DR: Progress in estimating age-at-onset distributions, cohort effects, and the conditional probabilities of PTSD from different types of trauma will require future epidemiologic studies to assess PTSD for all lifetime traumas rather than for only a small number of retrospectively reported "most serious" traumAs.

The Body Keeps the Score: Memory and the Evolving Psychobiology of Posttraumatic Stress
TL;DR: For instance, this article found that failure of declarative memory may lead to organization of the trauma on a somatosensory level (as visual images or physical sensations) that is relatively impervious to change.

Neuroimaging Studies of Amygdala Function in Anxiety Disorders
TL;DR: The development of new neuroimaging paradigms for measuring aspects of amygdala function, as well as the function of related brain regions are discussed, and it is concluded that such tools hold great promise for facilitating progress in relevant basic neuroscience aswell as clinical research domains.

TL;DR: The voxel-based morphometry showed a significant gray-matter volume reduction in the left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in trauma survivors with PTSD compared with those without PTSD, providing further support for the important role of ACC.

REM Sleep and the Early Development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
TL;DR: Development of PTSD symptoms after traumatic injury is associated with a more fragmented pattern of REM sleep, and measures of sleep duration and maintenance and the timing, intensity, and continuity ofREM sleep to the early development of PTSD are related.
