Abstract
This paper considers bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) for bandwidth-efficient transmission using software radios. A simple iterative decoding (ID) method with hard-decision feedback is suggested to achieve better performance. The paper shows that convolutional codes with good Hamming-distance property can provide both high diversity order and large free Euclidean distance for BICM-ID. The method offers a common framework for coded modulation over channels with a variety of fading statistics. In addition, BICM-ID allows an efficient combination of punctured convolutional codes and multiphase/level modulation, and therefore provides a simple mechanism for variable-rate transmission.

Improved turbo-equalization, with application to bit interleaved modulations

TL;DR: This paper improves existing algorithms in that the turbo-equalization algorithm exhibits better performance when used with large constellations, and can be used in conjunction with bit interleaving and thus applies tobit interleaved coded modulations (BICM), which are now frequently used in wireless transmissions.

User identification for convolutionally/turbo-coded systems and its applications

TL;DR: The user-identification algorithm embeds a periodic identification sequence into the convolutionally coded data sequence in the transmitter, and detects and removes the identification sequence with the assistance from the forward error-correction decoder in the receiver.

Low complexity iterative decoding for bit-interleaved coded modulation

TL;DR: A uniform soft-decision feedback ID (USF/ID) scheme is proposed that achieves impressive performance gain over HDF/ ID and has a practically more attractive implementation than SDF/ID, especially for complexity-constrained wireless applications.

Channel coding with multilevel/phase signals

TL;DR: A coding technique is described which improves error performance of synchronous data links without sacrificing data rate or requiring more bandwidth by channel coding with expanded sets of multilevel/phase signals in a manner which increases free Euclidean distance.
