TLDR
In this paper, the nature of the atomic arrangements in glassy solids has been described in several ways, such as: 1) a portion of the material is composed of small regions of crystalline-like order bonded together in essentially random orientations; 2) a few of the shortest interatomic distances correspond throughout the sample to those present in a crystalline phase.
Abstract
THE nature of the atomic arrangements in glassy solids has been described in several ways. In one model1, a portion of the material is pictured as being composed of small regions of crystalline-like order bonded together in essentially random orientations. In another model2, the material is depicted as a random network in which only a few of the shortest interatomic distances correspond throughout the sample to those present in a crystalline phase. Both models picture the glass as a continuous network and differ only in the degree of local atomic ordering.

Elastic effects of structural relaxation in glasses at low temperatures

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of the relaxation of two-state structural defects on the elastic properties of glasses at low temperatures is described and experimental data on the ultrasonic attenuation in vitreous silica and borosilicate glass in the temperature range between 0.3 and 4 K and at frequencies between 30 and about 500 MHz are presented and explained by this theory.

Neutron irradiation effects and structure of noncrystalline SiO2

TL;DR: In this article, the defects produced by fast neutron irradiation (E > 0.18 MeV) have been investigated by Raman and infrared spectroscopy, smallangle x-ray scattering, and electron microscopy.

High-resolution 23Na, 27Al and 29Si NMR spectroscopy of framework Aluminosilicate glasses

TL;DR: The results of high-resolution 23Na, 27Al and 29Si NMR spectroscopy of aluminosilicate glasses with MO/Al2O3 or L 2 O Al 2 O 3 = 1 (M = +2, L = +1 cations) showed that these glasses have a fully polymerized tetrahedral framework structure with only a defect level of nonbridging oxygens as discussed by the authors.

Oxide solution mechanisms in silicate melts: Systematic variations in the activity coefficient of SiO2

TL;DR: In this article, phase equilibria and spectroscopic data are used to develop a simple model for the interaction of various oxide components and molten SiO 2, which is manifested by an increase in positive deviations from ideality with increasing cation field strength in M x O y -SiO 2 systems.

The structure of vitreous silica

TL;DR: In this paper, a new study of the structure of vitreous silica has been made under greatly improved conditions, using Rh Kα radiation with the method of fluorescence excitation, reliable intensity values were measured to 4π sinθ/λ = 20.
