TLDR
Changes in the topographic distribution, population density, and ultrastructural features of metachromatic cells were studied in lung biopsies, suggesting that pulmonary parenchymal mast cells in fibrotic lung disorders undergo a chronic process of partial degranulation which differs from that found in anaphylaxis.

Asthma. From bronchoconstriction to airways inflammation and remodeling.

TL;DR: This work has shown that chronic inflammation in the different forms of Asthma can affect both the severity and duration of the symptoms of the disease and the treatment options for these conditions vary greatly.

New Insights into “The Riddle of the Mast Cells”: Microenvironmental Regulation of Mast Cell Development and Phenotypic Heterogeneity

TL;DR: In virtually every facet of the mast cell’s natural history, from its differentiation and maturation to its biochemistry and function, recent work has revealed considerably more complexity than had previously been suspected to exist.

Mast cells and basophils.

TL;DR: It is shown that mast cells and allergic mechanisms play at least some role in bronchial asthma and the incidence of these mechanisms in a cross section of all asthmatics is high.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mast cell tryptase is a mitogen for cultured fibroblasts.

TL;DR: It is reported here that tryptase, a trypsin-like serine proteinase of mast cell secretory granules, is a potent mitogen for fibroblasts in vitro and may provide a molecular link between mast cell activation and fibrosis.
