Using a resolution function to regulate parameterizations of oceanic mesoscale eddy effects

TLDR
In this article, the first baroclinic deformation radius to the horizontal grid spacing indicates where an ocean model could explicitly simulate eddy effects; a function of this ratio can be used to specify where eddy effect are parameterized and where they are explicitly modeled.

A Multifaceted Isoneutral Eddy Transport Diagnostic Framework and Its Application in the Southern Ocean

TL;DR: In this article , an isoneutral eddy transport diagnostic framework was proposed and applied in the Southern Ocean to analyze eddy potential vorticity (PV) transport dynamics, and the scale dependence of the generalized eddy flux and the transport eigenvalues is controlled by the non-Reynolds term.

FEOTS v0.0.0: a new offline code for the fast equilibration of tracers in the ocean

TL;DR: The capabilities of the Fast Equilibration of Ocean Tracers Software (FEOTS) are demonstrated in an application focused on the Argentine Basin, where intense eddy activity and the Zapiola Anticyclone lead to strong mixing of water masses.

FEOTS: A New Offline Code for the Fast Equilibration of Tracers in the Ocean

TL;DR: The Fast Equilibration of Ocean Tracers Software (FEOTS) is an end-to-end set of tools to efficiently calculate tracer distributions on a global or regional sub-domain using transport operators diagnosed from a comprehensive ocean model.

Sliding or Stumbling on the Staircase: Numerics of Ocean Circulation Along Piecewise‐Constant Coastlines

TL;DR: In this article , the authors show that the main characteristics of the flow are insensitive to the increase of the mesh resolution, and that the detachment of a vortex flowing past an outgoing corner of the coastline is missed with a free-slip condition at the corner.

Resolving the mesoscale at reduced computational cost with FESOM 2.5: efficient modeling 1 approaches applied to the Southern Ocean 2

TL;DR: In this paper , several cost-efficient, high-resolution modeling approaches are applied to simulations of the 12 Southern Ocean in past, present, and future climates and compared with an ensemble of 13 medium-resolution, eddy-present simulations and evaluated based on their ability to reproduce observed mesoscale activity and to reveal a response to climate change distinct from natural variability.

Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics

A.E. Gill
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe how the Ocean-Atmosphere system is driven by transfer of properties between the atmosphere and the ocean. But they do not consider the effects of side boundaries.
