The “point of decision” messaging significantly influenced fruit selection in a single dining hall setting in a competitive undergraduate liberal arts college in the southeastern United States.
Abstract
Purpose. Examine the impact of “point of decision” messages on fruit selection in a single dining hall setting. Setting. Competitive undergraduate liberal arts college in the southeastern United States. Intervention. “Point of decision” messages were compiled into a 35-slide multimedia PowerPoint presentation. Messages were displayed on a computer screen at a “point of decision” between the cookie and fruit stations during lunch for a total of 9 days. Measures. Baseline cookie and fruit consumption was measured 9 days prebaseline and 9 days postbaseline. A random sample of students completed surveys 1 week after the intervention. Analysis. t-tests were used to examine differences between prelevels of fruit consumption and levels measured simultaneously during “point of decision” messages. Descriptive statistics were used to examine perceptions of survey items 1 week postintervention. Results. A significant mean difference in daily fruit consumption was found following the slide presentation (df-8...

Effectiveness of interventions targeting physical activity, nutrition and healthy weight for university and college students: A systematic review and meta-analysis

TL;DR: This appears to be the first systematic review of physical activity, diet and weight loss interventions targeting university and college students and indicates that tertiary institutions are appropriate settings for implementing and evaluating lifestyle interventions, however more research is needed to improve such strategies.

Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors in College Students

TL;DR: The need for increased screening, risk assessment, education, and management in young adults should include the assessment of all CHD risk factors and lifestyle habits, blood pressure, glucose, and body mass index in addition to the traditional lipid panel for effective long-term risk reduction.

TL;DR: A significant effect of high exposure to text4baby on self-reported alcohol consumption postpartum is found and suggests the need to study dose-response effects of these interventions.

College campuses' influence on student weight and related behaviours: A review of observational and intervention research.

TL;DR: A narrative review synthesizes the literature on campus environmental/policy‐level factors associated with student diet, physical activity and weight, as well as campus interventions to address these factors and indicates that campus food environments may contribute to overconsumption and weight gain.

Physical Activity, Exercise, and Sedentary Behavior in College Students

TL;DR: Of the sedentary behaviors, only computer use for men and television watching for women were negatively correlated with exercise and physical activity, and gender-related relationships between sedentary and active behaviors should be considered in designing interventions to promote exercise in this population.

Prevalence of university students' sufficient physical activity: a systematic review.

TL;DR: Women, and especially African-American women, are among the least active students, and students living off-campus are more active than those on-campus, and Appropriate interventions and tools to measure ACSM-recommended physical activity are needed.

The impact of a school-based nutrition education intervention on dietary intake and cognitive and attitudinal variables relating to fruits and vegetables.

TL;DR: It is concluded that a whole school approach to increasing intakes of fruits and vegetables has a modest but significant effect on cognitive and attitudinal variables and on fruit intake.

Self-report measures and scoring protocols affect prevalence estimates of meeting physical activity guidelines.

TL;DR: The type of measure as well as the scoring protocol affected prevalence estimates of meeting the physical activity guidelines, indicating the difficulty of comparing prevalence rates across studies using different measures.

An intervention to increase fruit and vegetable consumption using audio communications: in-store public service announcements and audiotapes.

TL;DR: Self-reported fruit and vegetable intake increased significantly in both groups, perhaps in part because of a seasonal effect, and knowledge scores in the intervention group increased significantly over baseline and as compared with the control group.
