Variational Principles for Piezoelectric, Thermopiezoelectric, and Hygrothermopiezoelectric Continua Revisited

TLDR
In this paper, Cimento revisited some variational principles for the fundamental equations of a regular region of piezoelectric, thermopiez-olectric and hygrothermopiezoellectric materials in the elastic range.
Abstract
In this paper some variational principles are revisited for the fundamental equations of a regular region of piezoelectric, thermopiezoelectric, and hygrothermopiezoelectric (but non-stochastic, non-local, and non-relativistic) materials in the elastic range. Certain oversights, and especially, those involving the so-called Hu-Washizu variational principle of piezoelectricity that was first formulated in a paper (“Variational Principles in Piezoelectricity,” Lettere Al Nuovo Cimento, vol. 7, 449–454, 1973) are clarified within the “ISI-Web of Science” publications in the open literature. Similar variational principles of piezoelectricity are cited.

About heat waves

M Barrett
TL;DR: In this article, the Belgian Pilots' Guild raised the question of what effect exposure to radar radiation might have on the human body and reported that in 25 years of experience with radar, there were no known incidents of pilots being affected by radar waves.

Variational Principles in Mechanics

TL;DR: In this article, the authors define the principle of virtual work, which is a departure from other minimizing principles in that it incorporated stationarity and local stationarity in its formulation, and it is used to characterize static equilibrium through requiring that the work done by the external forces during a small displacement from equilibrium should vanish.

Review: A review of active structural control: challenges for engineering informatics

TL;DR: An active structure is an engineering structure containing sensors and actuators that, when active, modify the response of the structure to its environment as discussed by the authors, and it is a type of structural control that can be used in extreme environments (space, undersea, polar), contaminated contexts (nuclear, chemical, biological).

The elastic dielectric.

TL;DR: Slepian used an operational "definition" of stress and concluded that the compensating mechanical forces which must be introduced operationally are not derivable from a tensor.

A variational principle for Maxwell's equations

TL;DR: In this article, a direct variational formulation for the electromagnetic field in terms of the field vectors is presented. But this formulation is based on a canonical approach, and it is not suitable for the case of electromagnetic fields.

On variational methods in finite and incremental elastic deformation problems with discontinuous fields

TL;DR: In this paper, a variational statement for large elastic deformations at finite strains is given, which involves independent variation of the displacement, the (nonsymmetric first Piola-Kirclihoff) stress, and the deformation-gradient fields, and which includes both the boundary and the jump conditions.

Linear and Nonlinear Analysis of a Smart Beam Using General Electrothermoelastic Formulation

TL;DR: In this article, coupled electrothermoelastic equations applicable to the analysis of smart structures have been derived from first principles, and applying a layer-by-layer finite element model, the induced potential and mechanical deformations in the piezo and non-piezo core material have been obtained for various cases of actuation and sensing of a smart beam under external mechanical load and actuation potential.

Reciprocity, uniqueness and minimum principles in the linear theory of piezoelectricity

TL;DR: In this article, the authors established a reciprocal theorem for quasi-static and dynamic piezoelectricity and showed that the reciprocity relation implies new uniqueness results and minimum principles.
