TLDR
An overview of the winter circulation and upper ocean structure offshore of Western Iberia is presented in this article, where the focus is on winter slope currents, fronts and mesoscale eddies, as well as the connection of these local features to the large-scale circulation of the region.Abstract:
An overview of the winter circulation and upper ocean structure offshore of Western Iberia is presented. The focus is on winter slope currents, fronts and mesoscale eddies, as well as on the connection of these local features to the large-scale circulation of the region. Satellite sea surface temperature; sea surface elevation data from altimetry; cross-shore and meridional hydrological surveys and current meter observations, mainly obtained during winter periods, are used to illustrate features of the winter upper ocean structure and of the generation and evolution of the Iberia Poleward Current. A schematic/hypothetical model of winter upper ocean circulation on the scale of the Western Iberian Basin is given which attempts to systematize and resolve certain ambiguities in the existing circulation schemes and in the concepts and terminology used to describe observed features in the area.read more

Sub-regional ecosystem variability in the Canary Current upwelling
Javier Arístegui,Eric D. Barton,Xosé Antón Álvarez-Salgado,A. Miguel P. Santos,Francisco G. Figueiras,Souad Kifani,Santiago Hernández-León,Evan Mason,Eric Machu,Hervé Demarcq +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a comparative exploration of the biogeographical characteristics of different sub-regions comprising the Canary Current upwelling ecosystem (CanC) is presented, and it is shown that variability in coastline configuration, shelf width, coastal upwell, nutrient fertilization, productivity, or retentive vs. dispersive physical mechanisms may help explain subregional differences in fish distributions and abundances in the CanC.

Physical oceanography of the western Iberia ecosystem: Latest views and challenges
Paulo Relvas,Eric D. Barton,Jesus Dubert,Paulo B. Oliveira,Álvaro Peliz,J. C. B. da Silva,A. Miguel P. Santos +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the mesoscale physical processes recognized in the Western Iberia Ecosystem, complementing earlier reviews dedicated to larger scales, have been investigated, and the authors support the idea that these processes, superimposed on larger scale variability, are the major factor controlling the ecosystem functioning in the region.

TL;DR: In this paper, a compilation of robust and coherent paleohydrological proxies obtained from eleven cores distributed between 36 and 42°N was used to track the migration of the Polar Front (PF) over the Iberian margin during some of the cold climatic extremes of the last 45 ka.

Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe how the Ocean-Atmosphere system is driven by transfer of properties between the atmosphere and the ocean. But they do not consider the effects of side boundaries.

Extension to the North Atlantic oscillation using early instrumental pressure observations from Gibraltar and south-west Iceland
TL;DR: Early instrumental pressure measurements from Gibraltar and the Reykjavik area of Iceland have been used to extend to 1821 the homogeneous pressure series at the two locations In winter the two sites are located close to the centres of action that comprise the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) as mentioned in this paper.

Observations of a poleward surface current off the coasts of Portugal and Spain during winter
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented evidence of a warm, salty surface current flowing poleward along the Iberian Peninsula using a sequence of satellite infrared images and concomitant in situ hydrographic data obtained during the winter of 1983-1984.
