Abstract: The following sterols were identified in barley shoots: stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, campesterol, and cholesterol. The total sterol content of green and etiolated tissue was 2.84 and 3.20 milligrams per gram dry weight, respectively. The free sterols accounted for most of the difference in total sterol content. The sterol ester, sterol glycoside, and acylated sterol glycoside contents of green and etiolated barley shoots were essentially the same. Etiolated tissue had twice as much total β-sitosterol as stigmasterol, while green tissue had equal amounts of these two sterols. The campesterol and cholesterol content was the same in green and etiolated tissue. This same sterol composition pattern held true for the free, glycosidic, and acylated glycosidic sterols; however, the sterol ester fraction had a completely different composition pattern. The esterified stigmasterol content was quite low in green and etiolated tissue, and campesterol was the second largest esterfied sterol component in etiolated tissue. Abstract: Comparative studies of the sterol composition of four sterol fractions, vis., free sterols, sterol esters, sterol glucosides and esterified sterol glucosides, were conducted on the juice sacs of six varieties of oranges and two tangor varieties. The sterols quantified in each fraction were β-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, cholesterol, 24-ethylidene cholesterol, brassicasterol and 24-methylene cholesterol. Each variety showed its own intrinsic composition for these sterols in the four sterol fractions.

Abstract: A method is presented for the preparation of 2,4-3H-sterols (stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, campesterol, fucosterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol) via the technique of exchange-labeling of keto steroids and their subsequent conversion to sterols. The preparation of tritium-labeled 3β-hydroxy-24-norchol-5-en-23-oic acid and the synthesis of 2,4-3H-24-azacholesterol are reported. Some advantages of the exchange-labeling method over the conventional catalytic exchange method are discussed.

Abstract: In the present study, the utilization and biosynthesis of sterols in Artemia salina were investigated. The results obtained are as follows: 1) In spite of being supplied with the two types of diets containing ergosterol, stig-masterol, β-sitosterol, campesterol, and unknown sterol, Artemia was found to contain only cholesterol as a sterol. The result suggested that Artemia may modify these sterols to chole-sterol. 2) It was shown by the tracer experiment that Artemia did not incorporate acetate into sterols. The result indicated that Artemia may lack sterol-synthesizing ability.
