TL;DR: The Belt and Road Initiative as mentioned in this paper is a call of China for new modes of regional economic cooperation under the trend of development of economic globalization, which targets at promoting orderly and free flow of economic factors, efficient allocation of resources, and deep integration of markets.
Abstract: The Belt and Road Initiative—where the "Belt" stands for the Silk Road Economic Belt and the "Road" stands for the 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road—is a call of China for new modes of regional economic cooperation under the trend of development of economic globalization. It targets at promoting orderly and free flow of economic factors, efficient allocation of resources, and deep integration of markets; enabling the countries along the Belt and Road to achieve economic policy coordination and carry out broader, deeper, and more efficient economic cooperation; and jointly building an open, inclusive, and balanced regional economic cooperation architecture. Thus the Belt and Road Initiative is an alternative road to further economic globalization, but contains ideas that are different from the past, that is, the spirit of the Silk Road— "peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and win-win." Based on such an understanding, this article first analyzes the general background of the Belt and Road Initiative against economic globalization and the changing configurations of the world, and then discusses the Initiative's spatial connotation by revealing its multi-scalar and transscalar characteristics. The article points out that the Belt and Road Initiative is a national strategy, rather than a regional strategy, to coordinate all-around opening of China to the world and promote further integration of the country into the global economy. Last, the article suggests several research themes in geography that are brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative, including geopolitical studies, geography of countries of the region to explore cooperation opportunities, foreign direct investment theories advanced by the Belt and Road Initiative, and optimization of transcontinental transportation.

TL;DR: The present research found that red undermined the intellectual performance of Chinese students, consistent with findings obtained in the West.
Abstract: Previous research shows that red impairs individuals' performance on challenging intellectual tasks in achievement situations. However, no research to date has examined this issue in Chinese society. In China, red has a positive connotation in general (unlike in the West), but also has a negative connotation for students, given that teachers mark incorrect answers in red (like in the West). Therefore, the question of whether red promotes or undermines intellectual performance for Chinese individuals needs to be tested. The present research investigated this and found, consistent with findings obtained in the West, that red undermined the intellectual performance of Chinese students. Future directions and potential mechanisms are discussed.

TL;DR: Results of an exploratory user study suggest that the restricted space of the coffin along with its unsettling cultural connotation led to an engaging, thought provoking experience in a game in which one player is invited to lie down in a coffin.
Abstract: Uncomfortable interactions are a common aspect of daily life, and have been explored in Human-Computer Interaction; yet little is known about uncomfortable gaming experiences. In this paper, we report on the design and preliminary evaluation of a game in which one player is invited to lie down in a coffin. Results of an exploratory user study suggest that the restricted space of the coffin along with its unsettling cultural connotation led to an engaging, thought provoking experience. By combining the previously separately explored dimensions of physical and psychological discomfort, we hope to better understand the effects that such challenges can have on player experience.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cultural comparison and contrast between English and Chinese idioms from three aspects: cultural connotation overlaps, cultural conflicts and cultural vacancy is analyzed. But the majority of them have different cultural connotations.
Abstract: Idiom, being a special and indivisible part of language, is the crystallization of culture. With the development of globalization, idiom plays an increasingly important role in spreading national culture. Due to its special and close relationship with culture, idiom is very difficult to learn. In view of the difficulty in and significance of idiom learning, due attention and efforts should be given to the cultural comparison and contrast between English and Chinese idioms. This article attempts to analyze the cultural phenomena reflected by the cultural comparison and contrast between English and Chinese idioms from three aspects: cultural connotation overlaps, cultural connotation conflicts and cultural connotation vacancy. By introducing the knowledge of cultural overlaps, cultural conflicts and cultural vacancy, the article analyzes idioms from a relatively new cultural perspective. It starts with an introduction which includes basic knowledge of idioms. Then each part deals with a cultural phenomenon in the following order: introducing the cultural phenomenon, analyzing the causes and effects of the cultural phenomenon, putting forward solutions. The last part is conclusion which includes the implications and limitations of the article. It is found that some English and Chinese idioms have equivalent cultural connotations. But the majority of them have different cultural connotations. They are either opposite or vacant in cultural meaning. Meanwhile, many examples are cited to illustrate the cultural similarities and differences between English and Chinese idioms. The article may serve to enrich language learners’ knowledge on the cultural connotations of English and Chinese idioms. Consequently, the increasing cultural awareness would help learners get rid of the interference of mother tongue. At the same time, their foreign language proficiency and intercultural competence will be improved.

Abstract: This article investigates a sign system in promotional campaigns for the 2 sport/energy-drink brands PowerAde and Monster Energy. More specifically, the paper examines advertising materials published on the British Web sites of the 2 drink brands. The media texts are analyzed using semiotics and critical discourse analysis. In so doing, the author attempts to identify the meaning of sport in different contexts and settings and to interpret ideological connotation embedded in the commercial discourse on sport. The PowerAde advertising presents the meaning of sport as controlled and calculated physical activities associated with high-performance sport. This articulation suggests an idealization of productive individuals, and this appears to be the reification of capitalist ideology through sport. Monster Energy advertising tends to endorse alternative sporting subculture emphasizing the aspects of fun and spectacle, but such endorsement is only validated within the boundaries of consumer culture. The author...

TL;DR: It is found that manual annotation of connotation at the word-level is more reliable than using segment-level judgments, and connotation polarity is often, but not always, preserved in reference translations produced by humans.
Abstract: We present a pilot study analyzing the connotative language found in a bilingual corpus of French and English headlines. We find that (1) manual annotation of connotation at the word-level is more reliable than using segment-level judgments, (2) connotation polarity is often, but not always, preserved in reference translations produced by humans, (3) machine translated text does not preserve the connotative language identified by an English connotation lexicon. These lessons will helps us build new resources to learn better models of connotation and translation.

TL;DR: The concept of resilience has been initially described as the ability of system to become healthy and strong again after a disruptive event as discussed by the authors, however, the definitions and the connotations within it they recommended were quite multifarious.
Abstract: City transportation systems are always suffering various disruptions from both natural and man-made incidents. These disruptions can incur failure of system and thus bring a more extensive loss to the whole society. The concept of resilience was introduced into transportation system since it concerned about the performance of system under disruptions. Resilience has been initially described as the ability of system to become healthy and strong again after a disruptive event. On transportation resilience, a number of scholars have carried out exploratory researches from different perspectives. However, the definitions and the connotations within it they recommended were quite multifarious. This paper took a summative review of these definitions and connotations and tried to develop an integrated description about what a resilient transportation system is, and what aspects of characters it should have. This is a fundamental work for applying resilience to practice.

TL;DR: The authors discusses the translation of the numbers from one language to another in order to retain their meaning (in this case it is easy) and to preserve their connotations (and this is the hard part, as in every translation).
Abstract: The purpose of the note is to discuss the translation of the numbers from one language to another in order to retain their meaning (in this case it is easy) and to preserve their connotations (and this is the hard part, as in every translation). The lexical system of numbers is an excellent laboratory to study the semiotic phenomena of hypocoding and hypercoding at an intermediate level of complexity, that does not avoid the problems but still allows rigorous solutions. This problem takes a well-defined role in the two sections dedicated to perception and connotations, when some numbers assume the role of hypernyms similar to adjectives "some, many, too many". The various languages do not use the same system of hypernyms, so the translation, beyond the literal meaning, requires a particular knowledge, typical of bilingualism.

TL;DR: In this article, Fatkurrohman et al. analyzed denotative and connotative meaning of Creed's song lyrics using a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on questions of faith, Christianity, and eternity.
Abstract: Fatkurrohman, 2014. An analysis on the denotative and connotative meaning of creed’s song lyrics.graduating paper, educatioanal Islamic studies, English department.state Institute for Islamic studies (STAIN) salatiga. Consultant: Faizal Risdianto S.S. M.Hum Keyword:semantics, denotative and connotative meaning, creed. Semantics as the study of meaning stands at the very center of the linguistic quest to understand the nature of language and human language abilities. It is obvious that semantics has an important role in understanding and comprehending a language, especially for English. Semantics not only concern with the study of meaning but also with the relationship between language and culture.Denotative meaning and connotative meaning: both of them are based on a relationship between words & world. Denotation is the meaning of a word which is primarily refers to the real word, the "dictionary definition” for instance “cow” shows a kind of animal, “house” shows a kind of building.Connotation meaning is the aspect of meaning added to the denotation of a word it relates to the association that a word has above its denotation. The connotative meaning differs from one society to another. Connotation may be subject to variable exchange from generation to the next. Connotation may be rather subjective and not shared in the same way by all speakers of a language. Our individual experience of language and its relation to the world is to some extent unique and idiosyncratic. Connotation is not stable. That Creed‟s songs are analyzed using the descriptive qualitative approach in finding its denotative and connotative meaning. The data are taken from lyric of Creed‟s songs which consists of 5 lyrics from different albums such as My Sacrifice, Don‟t Stop Dancing, One Last Breath, My Own Prison; the researcher chooses those lyrics because it contains allusion and a popularly Christian theological concept, of absolute individual belief, usually Monotheistic. TL;DR: The paper points at the importance of fusing ideas from the semiotics interpretative tradition with experimental psychological knowledge and novel methodologies of computational semantics, and develops a novel algorithm – ConnoSense – that identifies the sense of an attribute’s connotation.
Abstract: Abstract Denotation is the literal sense of a word, while connotation is its extended sense. The current paper presents a cognitive computational model of the adjective’s connotation (e.g., sweet baby). We tested the model by developing a novel algorithm – ConnoSense – that identifies the sense of an attribute’s connotation. More specifically, ConnoSense identifies the sense of an attribute such as in the case of a “sweet smile” where the attribute/adjective “sweet” is used in the sense of “friendly.” Tested on a multiple-choice test of identifying the sense of a connotation (e.g., “dark thoughts”) the algorithm gained 90% accuracy and outperforms two other models that are based on vectorial semantics. These results support the validity of our model. The paper points at the importance of fusing ideas from the semiotics interpretative tradition with experimental psychological knowledge and novel methodologies of computational semantics.

Abstract: This paper examines the notion of fouls in sports. In the first part of the paper, we examine some actual distinctions and classifications between different kinds of fouls. In the second part we examine the significance, validity, and justification of these classifications from a normative perspective. The term ‘foul’ evokes negative connotation; some would say—negative normative connotations. Conventional wisdom suggests that typically to commit fouls is, by definition, to go against the rules or principles of the contest. Since sport contests are constitutive activities—this means that to foul is to go against the essence of the contest. In other words, to commit fouls seems not to play the game; it seems unsporting. Consider the following typical example: in a premiership match in 2014 Hull’s forward Nikica Jelavic spun around Company and had a clear path to the goal. Manchester City’s defender Vincent Kompany then held him back. Although immediately ejected from the game, it is noteworthy that Kompany ...

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper studied on the protection of intangible cultural heritage from the perspective of ecological protection with an example of protection of cultural heritage in Southeastern Hubei Province.
Abstract: China has abundant intangible cultural heritage resources. However, economic development brings pressure to ecological environment, changes of which have direct influence on the protection of intangible cultural heritage. At current stage, due to lack of strong consciousness of intangible cultural heritage protection in many regions in China, a part of intangible cultural heritage is in imminent danger. Establishment of intangible cultural heritage brands means inheritance and development of intangible cultural heritage, and is also a way of intangible cultural heritage protection. This paper mainly studies on intangible cultural heritage brands from the perspective of ecological protection with an example of protection of intangible cultural heritage in Southeastern Hubei Province. As intangible cultural heritage has tourism value, various countries begin to attach importance to tourism development of intangible cultural heritage. However, unreasonable development is caused for many factors, which cannot inherit or develop intangible cultural heritage but lead to frequent problems in its protection. Establishment of intangible cultural heritage brands is an important way of intangible cultural development as well as inheriting and carrying forward Chinese culture, and formation of intangible cultural heritage brand advantages is the key of enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese cultural enterprises. I. Connotation of intangible cultural heritage In 2003, definition of the concept of intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO was fully demonstrated in Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage: intangible cultural heritage refers to "a variety of practices, forms of expression, performances, knowledge and skills, and relevant tools, material objects, crafts and cultural places that are regarded as cultural heritage by groups, teams and individuals." According to definition of the UNESCO, intangible cultural heritage mainly includes legends passed down by word of mouth; forms of performance; manners, customs and etiquette etc formed at different social stages; practical achievements of human beings in conquering the nature and exploring knowledge; and traditional handicrafts. In 2004, China also joined this Convention. In 2005, China also issued relevant documents, which provided work of China to be implemented in protection of intangible cultural heritage including principles, objectives and methods etc, and various regions had also declared regional intangible cultural heritage for rating, and these intangible cultural heritage was made public in the form of directory. From an international perspective, intangible cultural heritage is an important performance of national culture, and represents characteristics of local cultures from a national aspect. With respect to the current situation of some intangible cultural heritage being in imminent danger, increasing efforts in protection of intangible cultural heritage is one of main ways for a country to inherit its traditional cultures. The country, government and individuals shall improve their protection awareness of inheriting Chinese outstanding culture and retaining Chinese cultural connotation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors elaborate the theoretical connotation and evolution of territory and address the analytic framework of territorial politics through an overview of the literature, so as to shed light on the significance and possibility of using territory concept to probe the complex social phenomena.
Abstract: Along with the 'Social Turn', the issue of power and space became rather significant and pivotal in the west. Thus, this paper intends to elaborate the theoretical connotation and evolution of territory and address the analytic framework of territorial politics through an overview of the literature, so as to shed light on the significance and possibility of using territory concept to probe the complex social phenomena. There is no doubt that the spatial construction of territory and territoriality, implicating the mutually constructing relation between space, power and behavior, would be helpful to develop a critical perspective to unravel the practices of spatial politics. Viewing from the skeleton of social space theory, territory could be produced through the process of power inserting form the elemental space. Moreover, space, place and territory could transform into each other under varied contexts. As far as territory itself is concerned, it is essentially comprised of space, power and boundary. It also proclaims that theory of territory in human geography has proceeded from biological approach to social approach, and shifted from state- centrism to multivalence and multi-scale. After that, this paper introduces two main empirical research subjects of territory in political geography, including state territoriality and politics of identity. Finally, it puts forward an analytic framework of territorial politics, comprising multiple processes of territorialization, de-territorialization and re-territorialization.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper employed methods in genome mapping of biology and Landscape Gene Theory (LGT) to integrate into a new research framework to address the corelationships among landscape genes of traditional settlements.
Abstract: Thousands of traditional settlements with prominent historical and cultural information of China are considered as the Chinese traditional treasures. They play an important role in the new tide of current social-economic development and urbanization processes of China. Recently, the Landscape Gene Theory(LGT), which aims to dissect the cultural features of traditional settlements of China, is a powerful tool for a better understanding of the landscape patterns of traditional settlements and is gaining more and more attention. Plenty of prominent cultural factors derived from the traditional settlements are identified by LGT. These are very helpful knowledge about the intrinsic cultural features implicated in the traditional settlements. However, LGT does not still cope well with the corelationships among landscape genes of traditional settlements. Therefore, LGT cannot capture the mechanisms between the prominent cultural factors and landscape images of traditional settlements. Targeted to partly resolve this issue, this paper employs methods in genome mapping of biology and LGT to integrate into a new research framework to address these mechanisms. The framework is named as Traditional Settlement Landscapes' Genome Maps(TSLGM) according to its conception and connotation. The paper is organized in the following orders. Firstly, it makes the definition and classification of TSLGM by the theoretical fundamental and essential features of LGT. Secondly, the functionalities and academic significances of TSLGM are also highlighted. Thirdly, practical flowcharts for constructing and organizing an instance of TSLGM are brought forward. Finally, 30 well-known traditional settlements of Hunan Province of China are taken as study areas. The paper portrays the spatial pattern for the 30 traditional settlements according to their TSLGM. Furthermore, a genome pattern identification of landscape genes of traditional settlements is performed by using Jinshan village of Rucheng County as an example. To sum up, this paper indicates that TSLGM plays a paramount role in capturing characteristics of the traditional settlements, which is a potential methodological progress for LGT. From this paper, it is found that TSLGM has some potential points in traditional settlement digitalization, planning pattern mining and characteristics of regional traditional landscapes identification.
