TL;DR: An experimental and theoretical study of closely spaced collinear coupled waveguides radiating through a common perfectly conducting ground plane is described in this paper, where the problem is formulated as a set of simultaneous integral equations and solved approximately by expanding the aperture field in a Fourier series.
Abstract: An experimental and theoretical study of closely spaced collinear coupled waveguides radiating through a common perfectly conducting ground plane is described. The problem is formulated as a set of simultaneous integral equations and solved approximately by expanding the aperture field in a Fourier series. The special case of a single isolated waveguide is treated first, and the results are compared with experiment as well as with the approximate results of Lewin. Attention is given to the edge singularities. The more general case of two collinear coupled waveguide slots is solved by the same numerical method using the symmetrical properties of the geometry. Phase and amplitude of the mutual coupling are evaluated and compared with experiment. Agreement is excellent.

TL;DR: In this paper, a distributed action of the evanescent field of a light wave in an internal reflection prism disposed so close to the film that internal reflection is partially frustrated is described.
Abstract: Coupling of light waves through a major surface of a thin film for propagation therein is achieved by means of a distributed action of the evanescent field of a light wave in an internalreflection prism disposed so close to the film that internal reflection is partially frustrated. Phase-matching of the evanescent wave and the wave propagating in the thin film is obtained by directing the input light beam at the proper angle within the prism toward the internal reflection surface and by providing appropriate indices of refraction of the components. Light-utilizing integrated circuits, including dielectric waveguides, modulators, parametric devices and amplifiers are provided with input and output coupling in this fashion. Systems employing directional coupling and channel dropping and adding are also disclosed.

TL;DR: In this article, a coupling arrangement for thin-film optical devices is described, which couples a laser beam into or out of a light guide with high efficiency, provided by an auxiliary film of low refractive index whose thickness is smoothly increased throughout the coupling region.
Abstract: A coupling arrangement for thin-film optical devices is disclosed which couples a laser beam into or out of a thin-film light guide with high efficiency. The coupling between the thinfilm guide and its bulk substrate is provided by an auxiliary film of low refractive index whose thickness is smoothly increased throughout the coupling region so that, for input coupling, the competing output coupling effect is minimized. In a preferred embodiment, the thickness of the thin-film guide itself is also increased beyond the coupling region. This permits then the thickness of the auxiliary coupling film to be tapered off, eventually to zero thickness, in the region of increased guide thickness.

TL;DR: In this article, a variable ratio torque transmission assembly has been proposed for a four or six wheel drive motor vehicle which includes a rotary input member which receives torque from the engine and first and second rotary output members connected to the front and rear axles respectively.
Abstract: Apparatus for a four or six wheel drive motor vehicle which includes a variable ratio torque transmission assembly connected by drive shafts to front and rear axles. The variable ratio torque transmission assembly has a rotary input member which receives torque from the engine, and first and second rotary output members connected to the front and rear axles respectively. The output members are coupled together by a hydraulic torque transmitting mechanism which includes means for selectively setting the ratio of the input torque that is transmitted to the two output members and thereby to the front and rear axles. This arrangement permits any desired ratio of torque transmission, such as one-third of the torque being transmitted to the front axle and two-thirds of the torque being transmitted to the rear axle. The assembly also includes a remote control means whereby the driver of the vehicle can lock the mechanism between the two output members so that full or maximum torque is transmitted to the front axle.

Abstract: A SELECTOR MECHANISM FOR A CHANGE-SPEED GEAR, PRIMARILY FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES, INCLUDES SELECTIVELY MOVABLE STRIKER FORKS, OR OTHER STRIKER MEMBERS, WHICH ARE SLIDABLY MOUNTED ON A STRIKER SHAFT THAT IS MOUNTED AT ONE END IN A FIRST WALL OF THE GEAR HOUSING. THE STRIKER MEMBERS CO-OPERATE WITH CLUTCH COUPLING SLEEVES OR OTHER COUPLING MEMBERS OF THE CHANGE-SPEED GEAR. ONE OF THE COUPLING MEMBERS, FOR AN AUXILIARY GEARSET WHICH MAY FOR INSTANCE BE ARRANGED TO GIVE AN OVERDRIVE RATIO, IS DISPOSED ON THE SIDE OF A SECOND WALL OF THE GEAR HOUSING REMOTE FROM THE OTHER COUPLING MEMBERS: THE STRIKER MEMBER FOR THE COUPLING MEMBER OF THE AUXILIARY GEARSET HAS A TUBULAR BOSS PORTION WHICH EXTENDS THROUGH, AND IS SLIDABLE IN, AN APERTURE IN THE SECOND WALL SO AS TO FORM A MOUNTING SUPPORT FOR THE STRIKER SHAFT RELATIVE TO THE SECOND WALL. TL;DR: In this article, an output coupling loop and a tuning loop are supported about a common axis and spaced-apart in parallel planes orthogonally intersecting the common axis.
Abstract: An output coupling loop and a tuning loop are supported about a common axis and spaced-apart in parallel planes orthogonally intersecting the common axis. These loops are magnetically coupled by a YIG sphere supported along the common axis with its center positioned between the parallel planes. The output coupling loop is electrically connected by a matched transmission line across a matched load, and the tuning loop (either alone or in combination with a series gap capacitance) is electrically connected by a pair of parallel-connected bypass capacitors across a bulk-oscillating device. One of these bypass capacitors and the bulk-oscillating device are supported on a heat sink in a plane parallel to the common axis and orthogonal to the parallel planes. Both loops, the YIG sphere, and the bulk-oscillating device are mounted in the gap between the poles of a closed loop electromagnet.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the mutual coupling between the waveguides in finite arrays by using the integral equation method and derived numerical solutions from which the coupling in general decreases with the wavelength, as well as the distance s between the two wave-guides, and that for large separations the rate of decrease is inversely proportional to s−.
Abstract: Mutual coupling between the waveguides in finite arrays has been analyzed by using the integral equation method. Numerical solutions are obtained from which we find that the coupling in general decreases with the wavelength, as well as the distance s between the waveguides, and that for large separations the rate of decrease is inversely proportional to s½. However, when the waveguides are loaded with dielectric plugs, the characteristics of coupling may be substantially changed, owing to the excitation of modes that are propagating inside the dielectric but evanescent in the empty waveguide region. For example, the coupling may be greatly enhanced or suppressed depending on the choice of parameters such as the dielectric constant and plug thickness. In particular, it is found that under suitable conditions the coupling can exhibit resonance characteristics.

Abstract: A web-winding system is disclosed as employing clutches so ganged on a common drive that wide webs may be wound simultaneously with, and to the same tightness as, narrower webs. The coupling of each such clutch is controlled by a computer which operates by maintaining constant the total end face area of the supply and rewind rolls. The drive speed is also computercontrolled to minimize the heat-producing slippage within such clutches.

TL;DR: In this article, a U-shpad spring is used to drive the U-shaped plate links of a hollow cylinder to the apex of a rotary coupling part, with the Ushpad springs being supported by U-Shpad springs and the apex formed by the plate links being urged inwardly by a spring reacting against a weight engaging the apex.
Abstract: A torque coupling having its capacity limited by the torque and the speed includes a hollow cylinder having plate links which form an apex which may extend toward the rotary coupling part or outwardly therefrom, the rotary coupling part having concave and convex surfaces for receiving the apex of the plate links with the plate links being supported by U-shpad springs and the apex formed by the plate links being urged inwardly by a spring reacting against a weight engaging the apex of the plate links so that spring pressure normally produces the driving action between the hollow cylinder and the rotary coupling part while the weights are urged outwardly by centrifugal force to limit the speed at which the coupling maintains a driving relation. The concave-convex surfaces may be rounded about centers transverse to the input and output axes to permit angular relation without stress.
