TL;DR: This article observed three dissociations in a case of alexia: a disturbance of reading, without comparable disturbance of oral expression, oral comprehension, writing, or spelling aloud; a disturbance located at the level of the phonological stage, without disturbance of the perceptual and expressive stages.
Abstract: Three dissociations were observed in a case of alexia: a disturbance of reading, without comparable disturbance of oral expression, oral comprehension, writing, or spelling aloud; a disturbance of the phonological reading process, without disturbance of the non-phonological reading process; a disturbance located at the level of the phonological stage, without disturbance of the perceptual and expressive stages. This pattern of results has been called phonological alexia.

TL;DR: In New Guinea, earthquake-caused landslides are as important as tree falls in the disturbance regime, and substantial areas of disturbed, nonclimax forest may accumulate.
Abstract: Earthquakes occasionally denude large areas of tropical forest: for example, 54 square kilometers in Panama in 1976 and 130 square kilometers in New Guinea in 1935. Earthquake rates in New Guinea, but not in Panama, are sufficiently high so that substantial areas of disturbed, nonclimax forest may accumulate. In New Guinea, earthquake-caused landslides are as important as tree falls in the disturbance regime.

TL;DR: A review paper presented at the Third International Conference on Permafrost held in July 1978 at Edmonton, Canada as discussed by the authors reviewed the literature covering 1974-1978 and covers subjects related to natural and human induced disturbance of terrain underlain by permafrost.
Abstract: This report is based on a review paper presented at the Third International Conference on Permafrost held in July 1978 at Edmonton, Canada. It reviews the literature covering 1974-1978 and covers subjects related to natural and human induced disturbance of terrain underlain by permafrost. Subjects included regard investigations undertaken in conjunction with oil and gas pipelines, terrain mapping, methods for estimating terrain sensitivity, methods of protecting terrain, and the thermal effects of off road transportation, oil spills, fire, removal of the surface soil layers, snow conditions, mining and other construction practices. Methods of protecting and restoring permafrost in the USSR are presented in tabular form. An appendix summarizes results of modeling and microclimatic investigation, and the distribution and properties of subsea, land-based, and alpine permafrost. /Authors/

TL;DR: In this article, the structure and function of these ecosystems stem directly from man's modifications of the water flow, and the consequences to hydrobiology are being studied on several rivers in southwest France.
Abstract: Hydroelectric development has brought about changes in many streams below dams, adding further to the disturbance caused earlier by construction of canals and weirs for navigation (Tourenq et al., 1978). The structure and function of these ecosystems stem directly from man’s modifications of the water flow. The consequences to hydrobiology are being studied on several rivers in southwest France.

TL;DR: It is concluded that relatively little information is available on the effects of environmental disturbances on life cycles, however, available information is sufficient to provide evidence of many problems that require attention.
Abstract: While many environmental disturbances have no readily detectable effect on aquatic invertebrates in the short term, they may prevent normal reproduction and cause eventual local extinction of a spe...

TL;DR: The results indicate that 48% of patients who had right pulmonary artery disturbances had additional flow disturbances detected in the ascending aorta or transverse aortic arch despite the fact that cardiac catheterization in these patients indicated absence of an anatomic abnormality in the left side of the heart.
Abstract: SUMMARYEcho Doppler examination purports to localize the origin of flow disturbances within the heart or great vessels. During our investigations of echo Doppler, frequency dispersions found in the transverse aortic arch, ascending aorta or right pulmonary artery that should indicate flow disturbances in those areas occurred in a set of lesions that did not involve the expected cardiac anatomic abnormalities. To learn the range of this false-positive problem, we reviewed all of our documented cases in which an echo Doppler had been obtained (n = 127). Our results indicate that 48% of our patients who had right pulmonary artery disturbances had additional flow disturbances detected in the ascending aorta or transverse aortic arch despite the fact that cardiac catheterization in these patients indicated absence of an anatomic abnormality in the left side of the heart. These false positives had the highest incidence of occurrence in patients who had high left cardiac output, but this also occurred in four instances in which the only cardiac lesion was pulmonary stenosis. The latter is thought to be due to an induced flow disturbance. We also found two patients whose only lesion was aortic stenosis, but these patients had secondary flow disturbance in the pulmonary artery; these two instances probably represent a flow disturbance induced from the aorta to the pulmonary artery. Knowledge of this set of false-positive results is important for proper interpretation of echo Doppler examinations.

Abstract: Seismic exploration method in arctic regions involving the generation of a seismic disturbance in the water beneath the ice in areas where conventional marine and land exploration methods are functionally inadequate. Seismic disturbances are generated by an air gun assembly which automatically executes lowering air guns through apertures in the ice and retrieving them while carrying out preventive measures against freeze-ups. Seismic sensing and recording equipment are positioned within an appropriate range to detect seismic data in the form of reflective or diffractive signals generated in response to the seismic disturbance after actuating the air gun array, wherein the seismic data is indicative of sub-surface structural formations existing below the body of water.

TL;DR: If erythromycin is as effective in treating Q fever as it appears to have been in these cases, it would simplify the approach to non-bacterial pneumonias and provide another drug for treating chronic Q fever.
Abstract: (tetracycline) may fail to reduce the duration of fever to less than five days.4 That our patients felt well and had a normal temperature 48-72 hours after starting erythromycin suggests that the drug helped resolve the disease in all cases. Erythromycin is thought to be the most effective antibiotic for legionnaire's disease and mycoplasma pneumonia, both of which are easily confused with Q fever radiologically and clinically. If erythromycin is as effective in treating Q fever as it appears to have been in these cases, it would simplify the approach to non-bacterial pneumonias and provide another drug for treating chronic Q fever.

TL;DR: The results are consistent with the hypothesis that sustained negative emotions depend more on the cognitive appraisal of events than events themselves, and the predicted that irrationality will correlate higher with emotional disturbance than stressful life events.
Abstract: Albert Ellis (2) claims that cognitions play a predominant role in emotjonal disturbance. Accordingly, environmental circumstances do not directly cause emotional disturbance, but interpretations of these circumstances do. Ellis has enumerated some common interpretations or assumptions likely to cause emotional disturbance. Subsequent researchers (3) have construcred scales from Ellis' assumptions and found scores to correlate with emotional disturbance. This study purports to measure the relative association of irrationality and stressful life events with emotional disrurbance. It is predicted that irrationality will correlate higher with emotional disturbance than stressful life events. Stressful life events are those which respondents rate as undesirable and which are theoretically and practically independent of the respondent's mental condition. Sixty-two students (17 men and 45 women, M.,. = 23 yr.) at the Reading Area Community College (Pa.) served as a sample of convenience. They completed three questionnaires designed to measure life change, modified from Anderson (I), irrationality (3 ) , and emotional disturbance (4). The ~rrxlonality scale correlated .33 with Langner's scale (p < .01), that is, as irrationality scores increased, so did emotional disturbance. However, the correlation of .16 between life stress and Langner's scale did not reach significance (p = .11). The results are consistent with the hypothesis that sustained negative emotions depend more on the cognitive appraisal of events than events themselves.
