TL;DR: The experiment results indicated that the wearable detector offers a good user experience by exerting a small force on fingers, and the hand goniometric system has an excellent performance in terms of hand motion detection.
Abstract: This paper presents a wearable and stretchable detector for simultaneous finger joint motion measurement, providing the feasible technical solutions to solve the problems existing in the current devices. The sensor array installed in the detector consists of 14 custom-made bending sensors and an inertial measurement unit with high accuracy. The glove support for a sensor array, which is made of three silicone materials with different elasticity, not only overcomes the drawbacks of cloth support, but also addresses the compatibility between the stretch substrate and the inelastic sensing components. Besides, two-section electrical connection avoids the problems caused by the external wires in traditional solutions to enhance the durability of glove. The experiment results indicated that the wearable detector offers a good user experience by exerting a small force on fingers. The device also shows a strong durability as it worked properly after tens of thousands of bending. The measurement tests on a single sensor demonstrated that two kinds of sensors are both with high accuracy. Besides, the hand goniometric system has an excellent performance in terms of hand motion detection. The measurement error of the device in subjects with different hand sizes is within a reasonable range. The good properties of the sensory detector allow it to be applied in clinical applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bendable smart sensing structure was obtained by simultaneous printing of functional materials along with conventional polymer-based 3D printing materials using a low-cost open-source 3D printer augmented with a silver palladium metallic paste extruder.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel additive manufacturing method to obtain bendable smart sensing structures having printed strain sensors and interconnects to gain access to embedded electronic components. The presented smart structure is obtained by simultaneous printing of functional materials along with conventional polymer-based 3D printing materials. To this end, a low-cost open-source 3D printer was augmented with a silver palladium metallic paste extruder. The strain sensors in the presented 3D printed smart structure are particularly useful for wearable motion sensing applications such as knee joint motion analysis. The printed interconnects allow for electrical connection with the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) embedded within the 3D printed structure. With electronic components embedded in the flexible 3D printed structure, this work also demonstrates a novel method for soft packaging of electronic and sensing components. The electrical tests conducted on the smart structure show excellent electrical continuity. The 3D printed strain sensors, tested in static and dynamic bending conditions, showed a linear response of resistance. Under no strain, the resistance of the sensor was measured to be 0.9671 n (resistivity of 9.671×10−6 Ω.m) and during testing it exhibited a gauge factor of 1. Multi-material additive manufacturing demonstrated in this paper opens a new direction for fabrication of complex 3D structures with embedded sensors and electronics and offers significant advantages for rapid prototyping and packaging.

TL;DR: A detailed analytical model is derived for a state-of-the-art reconfiguration architecture capturing the losses introduced by the parasitic resistances of the circuit components and a novel fast charging strategy is evaluated, which for the first time utilizes the reconfigurable battery pack architecture in order to reduce the losses during fast charging.
Abstract: Recently, reconfigurable battery packs that can dynamically modify the electrical connection topology of their individual cells are gaining importance. While several circuit architectures and management algorithms are proposed in the literature, the electrical characteristics of the reconfiguration circuit architectures are not sufficiently studied so far. In this paper, we derive a detailed analytical model for a state-of-the-art reconfiguration architecture capturing the losses introduced by the parasitic resistances of the circuit components. Based on this model we evaluate a novel fast charging strategy, which for the first time utilizes the reconfigurable battery pack architecture in order to reduce the losses during fast charging by switching between parallel and series connection of the cells. In order to do this, we consider the electrical characteristics of the reconfigurable circuit components. Since the component resistances are the main driver for the power losses during charging, we are able to give a realistic perspective on the overall pack performance and the efficiency increase due to the utilized fast charging strategy. Furthermore, using the analytical model, we highlight the challenges faced by existing reconfiguration architectures using state-of-the-art components and we derive specifications for the switches for further improving the energy efficiency. Experimental results show that our strategy improves the charging efficiency by up to 10 %.

TL;DR: In this paper, issues and solutions for micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) powering through semiconductor devices towards one-chip MEMS, especially those with microactuators that require high voltage (HV) for operation are addressed.
Abstract: In this paper, we address issues and solutions for micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) powering through semiconductor devices towards one-chip MEMS, especially those with microactuators that require high voltage (HV, which is more than 10 V, and is often over 100 V) for operation. We experimentally and theoretically demonstrated that the main reason why MEMS actuators need such HV is the tradeoff between resonant frequency and displacement amplitude. Indeed, the product of frequency and displacement is constant regardless of the MEMS design, but proportional to the input energy, which is the square of applied voltage in an electrostatic actuator. A comprehensive study on the principles of HV device technology and associated circuit technologies, especially voltage shifter circuits, was conducted. From the viewpoint of on-chip energy source, series-connected HV photovoltaic cells have been discussed. Isolation and electrical connection methods were identified to be key enabling technologies. Towards future rapid development of such autonomous devices, a technology to convert standard 5 V CMOS devices into HV circuits using SOI substrate and a MEMS postprocess is presented. HV breakdown experiments demonstrated this technology can hold over 700 to 1000 V, depending on the layout.

TL;DR: In this article, a cable connection apparatus and an uninterruptible power supply distribution method was proposed to reduce the operation time of a cable clamp by a simple mechanical operation without relying on the strength of the electro-pneumatic live wire.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a cable connection apparatus and an uninterruptible power supply distribution method. More specifically, in a conventional uninterruptible power supply distribution method, a heavy construction cable clamp has been connected and demolished by relying on the strength of an electro-pneumatic live wire. In the present invention, the construction cable clamp is towed and lifted by a mechanical operation of the small strength of the electro-pneumatic live wire. In a conventional manner, a temporal cable locker is required to be separately installed, so that the construction cable is held and connected to an extra high-voltage power line. In the present invention, the temporal cable locker is not used, and the cable clamp is held, with an insulating towing belt, in the cable clamp connection apparatus having insulation and lifting functions, and the construction cable clamp held in the cable clamp connection apparatus is directly connected to the extra high-voltage power line if necessary, such that an operation process is simplified, thereby shortening an operation time. It is possible to perform complete electrical connection of the construction cable clamp by a simple mechanical operation without relying on the strength of the electro-pneumatic live wire. Thus, a workload of an operation can be remarkably reduced, thereby enhancing field utility, economical efficiency, and safety.

Abstract: We propose a novel Si photonics module that overcomes the issues of conventional Si photonics modules such as package structure and electrical connection. The module incorporates an optical fiber socket fabricated by blind via socket (BVS) technology, which implements backside optical I/O in a photonic IC (PIC) by forming blind via holes on the backside. High-speed high-density electrical connection to both the PIC and an electrical IC (EIC) is also obtained in the module by fan-out wafer level packaging (FOWLP) technology. These technologies achieve a surface-mountable substrate-less fan-out optical module. It realizes a practicable integrated module of optoelectronic devices excellent in terms of electrical characteristics such as signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI), heat characteristics, and miniaturization. This paper presents a BVS module that enables optical coupling between a III-V/Si photodiode (PD) fabricated on a Si substrate and a multi-mode optical fiber by passive alignment of only insertion of the fiber into a blind via hole on the backside. High-speed optical signal transmission is also demonstrated with a fan-out optical module in which a BVS and an EIC are integrated by FOWLP and a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) or PD is mounted on the BVS.
