TL;DR: The results have been encouraging with substantial local tumor control and no late urinary or rectal disturbances in the 49 patients who have been followed from 6 to 30 months.
Abstract: A technique involving a pelvic lymphadenectomy and a retropubic implantation of the prostate with iodine 125 encapsulated sources is under investigation at Memorial Hospital. This technique is simple and applicable to patients with localized cancer of the prostate, clinically stage B or C. It has increased the accuracy of staging, carries no mortality and has low morbidity. The results have been encouraging with substantial local tumor control and no late urinary or rectal disturbances in the 49 patients who have been followed from 6 to 30 months.

TL;DR: The intrinsic anatomy of the prostate and the sphincter mechanism of the urethra allows more objective consideration of the aetiology of prostatitis and its pathology and provides support for a transurethral approach to surgical cure in the cases which advance to this stage.
Abstract: Summary The intrinsic anatomy of the prostate and the sphincter mechanism of the urethra allows more objective consideration of the aetiology of prostatitis and its pathology. The pathological anatomy provides a further reason for the anomalies in the characteristics of the EPS and the difficulty of cure in some cases. It furthermore provides support for a transurethral approach to surgical cure in the cases which advance to this stage.

TL;DR: The single case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate is reported, a rare but distinctive variant of prostatic adenocarcinoma that has resulted in a three-year asymptomatic period for the patient.
Abstract: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate is a rare but distinctive variant of prostatic adenocarcinoma. A review of 725 cases of carcinoma of the prostate yielded only the single case reported in this paper. The tumor is histologically identical to adenoid cystic carcinoma of salivary gland and breast. Whereas the myoepithelial cell is probably the cell of origin of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast, the presence of the myoepithelial cell in human prostate has not been established. Transurethral resection of the tumor has resulted in a three-year asymptomatic period for the patient. Further studies are needed to establish the cell of origin and clinical behavior of this morphologically distinctive prostatic adenocarcinoma.

TL;DR: Three patients had widespread skeletal metastases whose bone scans appeared to be normal, and false negative scans were due to symmetrical increased radiopharmaceutical uptake in virtually all bones.
Abstract: Three patients had widespread skeletal metastases whose bone scans appeared to be normal. False negative scans were due to symmetrical increased radiopharmaceutical uptake in virtually all bones. Caution must be taken in the interpretation of bone scans in patients with malignant disease which tends to metastasize diffusely (e.g., from the breast, prostate and lung). False negative interpretations may be avoided by viewing at least one radiograph containing bone at the time the scan is interpreted, the most practical being the admission chest film.

TL;DR: It has been found that the prostate, the anterior pituitary, the submaxillary gland and the pancreas have a rather elevated 5 α-reductase activity and the activity of the 3α-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase was found to be totally unrelated to the 5α-reducing capacity of each structure.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is concluded that the androgen responsiveness of a particular tissue cannot be accounted for by any of the parameters of 5α-reductase activity studied: the occurrence of an enzyme with particularly high affinity for testosterone, the total cellular activity, or the absolute or relative amount of this activity associated with purified nuclei.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Although androgens exert significant control over transcriptional processes in the prostate gland, and appear to regulate the synthesis of aldolase mRNA de novo, the possibility exists for additional means of control at the translational level of a Aldolase synthesis.
Abstract: 1. Aldolase was selected as a suitable marker for following the androgenic regulation of mRNA synthesis in the prostate gland. 2. Antibodies raised in rabbits against crystalline prostate aldolase were used to monitor the synthesis of this androgen-induced enzyme after hormonal stimulation of castrated animals, by using procedures in vivo and in vitro for the translation of prostate poly(A)-rich mRNA. 3. After androgenic stimulation in vivo the poly(A)-rich mRNA was isolated from the prostate gland and other tissues of castrated rats, and added to a protein-synthesizing system in vitro derived from Krebs II ascites-tumour cells. By using this approach it was found that androgens regulate the synthesis of aldolase mRNA in a highly tissue-specific manner. Stimulation of aldolase mRNA synthesis reached a maximum after 8h of androgenic treatment and then declined. 4. The androgenic control of aldolase mRNA synthesis was also investigated in vivo. After treatment of castrated animals with various steroids in vivo [35S]methionine was injected directly into the prostate gland, and labelled aldolase was selectively precipitated from isolated polyribosomes with anti-aldolase serum. The regulation of aldolase mRNA synthesis in the prostate gland was stringently steroid-specific and could only be evoked by androgens. After a single injection of testosterone, aldolase synthesis reached a maximum after 16h of hormonal stimulation and then declined. 5. Although androgens exert significant control over transcriptional processes in the prostate gland, and appear to regulate the synthesis of aldolase mRNA de novo, the possibility exists for additional means of control at the translational level of aldolase synthesis. The results are discussed in the context of the overall mechanism of action of androgens.

TL;DR: If 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (17beta-hydroxy-5alpha-androstan-3-one) is administered to castrated rats before prostatic atrophy has commenced, secretory activity of the prostate is stimulated, but not proliferation.
Abstract: If 5α-dihydrotestosterone (17β-hydroxy-5α-androstan-3-one) is administered to castrated rats before prostatic atrophy has commenced, secretory activity of the prostate is stimulated, but not proliferation. Once the number of cells has fallen below normal, hormone induces proliferation until the normal cellular complement has been restored; then proliferation ceases, but secretory activity is stimulated.

TL;DR: Experiments in vitro and in vivo demonstrated that the capacity of SC-42 cells to form 5α-reduced products from testosterone was less than that of combined seminal vesicle and ventral prostate tissue and greater than thatof SC-115 cells.
Abstract: 5α-Reduction and intracellular binding of testosterone in the mouse mammary androgen-dependent Shionogi carcinoma 115 (SC-115) and nonresponsive Shionogi carcinoma 42 (SC-42) were examined by in vitro and in vivo methods. Experiments in vitro demonstrated that the capacity of SC-42 cells to form 5α-reduced products from testosterone was less than that of combined seminal vesicle and ventral prostate tissue and greater than that of SC-115 cells. The capacity of nonsex accessory tissues such as muscle, liver and spleen was much less. In in vivo experiments, in which 3H-testosterone (2 μg⁄310 μCi⁄ mouse) was injected into mice bearing SC-115 or SC-42, the retention at 1 hr of 3H-testosterone † 3H-5α-reduced products per g tissue in SC-115 tumor and seminal vesicle † prostate was 5–10 times that in SC-42 tumor, muscle, liver and blood. 3H-Testosterone was the main steroid found in SC-115, whereas 3H-17β-hydroxy-5α-androstan- 3-one was the main steroid in seminal vesicle† prostate. TL;DR: A case of bilateral breast metastases developing in a patient with carcinoma of the prostate while on oestrogen therapy is described, and histochemical analysis can resolve the problem.
Abstract: SUMMARY A case of bilateral breast metastases developing in a patient with carcinoma of the prostate while on oestrogen therapy is described. Differentiation between prostatic metastases and primary breast tumours under these circumstances is important as the treatment for each is different. Such differentiation may be difficult by conventional histological techniques, but histochemical analysis can resolve the problem, as was possible in this case.

TL;DR: A review of the medical literature shows reported cases of various types of sarcomas of the prostate in children and adolescents, but prostatic carcinomas are extremely rare, and roentgenographic findings are emphasized.
Abstract: WITHIN the past few decades, few cases of malignant tumor of the prostate gland in young adults have been diagnosed and reported. A review of the medical literature shows reported cases of various types of sarcomas of the prostate in children and adolescents, 1 but prostatic carcinomas are extremely rare. 2-4 The first case of carcinoma of the prostate gland in early childhood ever described was published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology in 1959, and four more cases have subsequently been reported. Four cases of prostatic carcinoma in adolescents have been reported since 1912. None of them had roentgenographic findings like those in the case of a 20-year-old man with pathologically confirmed (by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) carcinoma of the prostate. The roentgenographic findings are emphasized. Report of a Case A 20-year-old man was first referred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Nov
