TL;DR: In this paper, it is conjectured and demonstrated that any supersymmetric compactification of the heterotic string with an N = 2 superconformal theory is equivalent to a compactification on a manifold of SU( N ) holonomy, and in particular an arbitrary gluing of the discrete models with c=9 gives a solvable HST on some Calabi-Yau manifold.

TL;DR: In this article, the operator construction of the interacting string field theory presented by Witten is completed and the ghost sector of the theory is discussed in detail, using the fermionic formulation of the ghosts.

TL;DR: The relation between the string scale m s = 2 α′ and the Planck scale m Pl = 1 G N in lower-dimensional string theories that do not admit an interpretation as compactified higher-dimensional theories is investigated in this paper.

TL;DR: It is argued that the Kaaumlhler geometry of the loops on space-time describes bosonic string theory, the dynamical variable of closed-bosonic-string theory.
Abstract: We argue that the Kaaumlhler geometry of the loops on space-time describes bosonic string theory. The Kaaumlhler potential is the dynamical (field) variable of closed-bosonic-string theory. The equation of motion for this field is that a generalized Ricci tensor vanishes. Loops on flat space constitute a solution only in 26 dimensions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a non-supersymmetric string theory with world-sheet fermions is considered and different consistent ways of summing over the spin structures lead to various vacua of the bosonic theory.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: By quantizing bosonic string mechanics in harmonic world sheet coordinates, the authors obtained a BRST operator whose coordinates include the world-sheet metric, and these gauges are covariant under an ISp(2) symmetry which includes not only BRST transformations but also anti-BRST and the Sp(2).

TL;DR: In this article, a BRST invariant operator ϒ encoding in closed form transition amplitudes between open strings and closed strings was obtained, where the residues of the closed string poles in the one-loop two-point diagram of Witten's string field theory are finite sums of products of these amplitudes.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the equivalence of Witten's string theory action and the cubic action for string fields in the open string Fock space has been investigated and a simple derivation of a recently discovered associativity anomaly is given.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the possibility that Witten's field theory of the open bosonic string may contain closed strings without explicit closed string fields, and explore the problem of how to answer questions about closed string scattering, where is the general coordinate invariance which must be associated with a consistent theory of interacting, spin-two particles?

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the simple measure (the product of differentials of all the fields) is BRST invariant, thus maintaining the invariance of the gauge-fixed action at the quantum level.

TL;DR: In this article, a selection rule of Yukawa couplings is derived in the string theory on the Z-orbifold, using the symmetries of six-and 16-dimensional internal space.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the problem of formulating a field theory of interacting closed strings analogous to Witten's open-string field theory was considered, and two natural candidates have been suggested for an off-shell three-string interaction vertex: one scheme involves a cyclic geometric overlap in spacetime, while the other is obtained by stuttering the Fock-space realization of the open string vertex.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the canonical structure of string field theory in midpoint coordinates is studied, which consists of second class constraints, together with dependent first class constraints and is shown to be the same in the interacting theory as in the free theory at least on Fock-space states.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the structure of Witten's formulation of the free Ramond string field theory was analyzed and connections between their string fields were established, and it was shown that the established connections eliminate all terms with mixed mass levels.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a modified Green-Schwarz covariant supersymmetric string action was used to construct a free four-dimensional string, which is tachyon-free, ghost-free and Lorentz invariant.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors considered the closed bosonic string theory with 8 of the coordinates compactified on a torus and replaced by 16 world-sheet spinor coordinates, and found explicitly vertices in the zero string length limit, showing that the nilpotency requirement of the BRST transformation is satisfied at first order.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a simple mechanism for spacetime supersymmetry breaking in ten-dimensional heterotic string theory is proposed, where a hidden two-dimensional sigma model sector can induce desirably small supersymmetric breaking, without upsetting the zero value of the cosmological constant, through a topological instanton effect due to an abelian gauge field.
