TL;DR: The malaria vaccine did not provide significant protection against clinical malaria, but on the basis of secondary results, it may have strain-specific efficacy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clearance of drug-resistant parasites as a model for protective immunity in Plasmodium falciparum malaria.
Abdoulaye A. Djimde,Ogobara K. Doumbo,Ousmane Traore,Ando B. Guindo,Kassoum Kayentao,Yacouba Diourte,Safiatou Niaré-Doumbo,Drissa Coulibaly,Abdoulaye K. TL;DR: Age-adjusted comparison of subjects able to clear resistant parasites and those unable to do so provides a new phenotype for identifying host immune and genetic factors responsible for protective immunity against malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Safety and immunogenicity of an AMA1 malaria vaccine in Malian children: results of a phase 1 randomized controlled trial.
Mahamadou A. Thera,Ogobara K. Doumbo,Drissa Coulibaly,Dapa A. Diallo,Abdoulaye K. Kone,Ando B. Guindo,Karim Traore,Alassane Dicko,Issaka Sagara,Mahamadou S. Plowe +33 more
TL;DR: Anti-AMA-1 antibodies increased significantly in both malaria vaccine groups, peaking at nearly 5-fold and more than 6-fold higher than baseline in the half-dose and full-dose groups, respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of schistosoma haematobium infection with protection against acute plasmodium falciparum malaria in malian children
Kirsten E. Lyke,Alassane Dicko,Abdoulaye Dabo,Lansana Sangaré,Abdoulaye K. Kone,Drissa Coulibaly,Ando B. Guindo,Karim Traore,Modibo Daou,Issa Diarra,Marcelo B. Sztein,Christopher V. Plowe,Ogobara K. Doumbo +12 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that underlying schistosomiasis is associated with protection against clinical falciparum malaria in an age-dependent manner.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of intraleukocytic Plasmodium falciparum malaria pigment with disease severity, clinical manifestations, and prognosis in severe malaria.
Kirsten E. Lyke,Dapa A. Diallo,Alassane Dicko,Abdoulaye K. Kone,Drissa Coulibaly,Ando B. Guindo,Yacouba Cissoko,Lansana Sangaré,Seydou Coulibaly,Blaise Dakouo,Terrie E. Taylor,Ogobara K. Doumbo,Christopher V. Plowe +12 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that pigmented neutrophils are associated with cerebral malaria and with death in children with severe malaria, and the presence of malaria pigment in monocytes and neutrophil is validated as a marker for disease severity.
