Journal ArticleDOI
The cardiovascular health study: Design and rationale
Linda P. Fried,Nemat O. Borhani,Paul L. Enright,Curt D. Furberg,Julius M. Gardin,Richard A. Kronmal,Lewis H. Kuller,Teri A. Manolio,Maurice B. Mittelmark,Anne B. Newman,Daniel H. O'Leary,Bruce M. Psaty,Pentti M. Rautaharju,Russell P. Tracy,Philip G. Weiler +14 more
TL;DR: These examinations in CHS permit evaluation of CVD risk factors in older adults, particularly in groups previously under-represented in epidemiologic studies, such as women and the very old.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Sleep Apnea, and Hypertension in a Large Community-Based Study
F. Javier Nieto,Terry Young,Bonnie K. Lind,Eyal Shahar,Jonathan M. Samet,Susan Redline,Ralph B. D'Agostino,Anne B. Newman,Michael D. Lebowitz,Thomas G. Pickering +9 more
TL;DR: The findings from the largest cross-sectional study to date indicate that SDB is associated with systemic hypertension in middle-aged and older individuals of different sexes and ethnic backgrounds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sarcopenia: an undiagnosed condition in older adults. Current consensus definition: prevalence, etiology, and consequences. International working group on sarcopenia.
Roger A. Fielding,Bruno Vellas,William J. Evans,Shalender Bhasin,John E. Morley,Anne B. Newman,Gabor Abellan van Kan,Sandrine Andrieu,Juergen M. Bauer,Denis Breuille,Tommy Cederholm,Julie Chandler,Capucine De Meynard,Lorenzo M. Donini,Tamara B. Harris,Aimo Kannt,Florence Keime Guibert,Graziano Onder,Dimitris Papanicolaou,Yves Rolland,Daniel Rooks,Cornel C. Sieber,Elisabeth Souhami,Sjors Verlaan,Mauro Zamboni +24 more
TL;DR: Sarcopenia should be considered in all older patients who present with observed declines in physical function, strength, or overall health, and patients who meet these criteria should further undergo body composition assessment using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry with sarcopenia being defined using currently validated definitions.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Loss of Skeletal Muscle Strength, Mass, and Quality in Older Adults: The Health, Aging and Body Composition Study
Bret H. Goodpaster,Seok Won Park,Tamara B. Harris,S. B. Kritchevsky,Michael C. Nevitt,Ann V. Schwartz,Eleanor M. Simonsick,Frances A. Tylavsky,Marjolein Visser,Anne B. Newman +9 more
TL;DR: Although the loss of muscle mass is associated with the decline in strength in older adults, this strength decline is much more rapid than the concomitant loss of Muscle mass, suggesting a decline in muscle quality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Strength, But Not Muscle Mass, Is Associated With Mortality in the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study Cohort
Anne B. Newman,Varant Kupelian,Marjolein Visser,Eleanor M. Simonsick,Bret H. Goodpaster,Stephen B. Kritchevsky,Frances A. Tylavsky,Susan M. Rubin,Tamara B. Harris +8 more
TL;DR: Low muscle mass did not explain the strong association of strength with mortality, demonstrating that muscle strength as a marker of muscle quality is more important than quantity in estimating mortality risk.
