Deciphering the cryptic genome : genome-wide analyses of the rice pathogen Fusarium fujikuroi reveal complex regulation of secondary metabolism and novel metabolites
Philipp Wiemann,Christian M. K. Sieber,Katharina Walburga von Bargen,Lena Studt,Eva-Maria Niehaus,José J. Espino,Kathleen Huß,Caroline B. Michielse,Sabine Albermann,Dominik Wagner,Sonja Verena Bergner,Lanelle R. Connolly,Andreas Fischer,Gunter Reuter,Karin Kleigrewe,Till Bald,Brenda D. Wingfield,Ron Ophir,Stanley Freeman,Michael Hippler,Kristina M. Smith,Daren W. Brown,Robert H. Proctor,Martin Münsterkötter,Michael Freitag,Hans-Ulrich Humpf,Ulrich Güldener,Bettina Tudzynski +27 more
TL;DR: Combined comparative genomics and genome-wide experimental analyses identified novel genes and secondary metabolites that contribute to the evolutionary success of F. fujikuroi as a rice pathogen.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative "Omics" of the Fusarium fujikuroi Species Complex Highlights Differences in Genetic Potential and Metabolite Synthesis
Eva-Maria Niehaus,Martin Münsterkötter,Robert H. Proctor,Daren W. Brown,Amir Sharon,Yifat Idan,Liat Oren-Young,Christian M. K. Sieber,Ondřej Novák,Aleš Pěnčík,Danuše Tarkowská,Kristýna Hromadová,Stanley Freeman,Marcel Maymon,Meirav Elazar,Sahar A. Youssef,El Said M. El-Shabrawy,Abdel Baset A. Shalaby,Petra M. Houterman,Nelson L. Brock,Immo Burkhardt,E. A. Tsavkelova,Jeroen S. Dickschat,Petr Galuszka,Ulrich Güldener,Bettina Tudzynski +25 more
TL;DR: Comparisons revealed species-specific and isolate-specific differences in the composition and expression of genes involved in SM production including those for phytohormome biosynthesis, suggesting that SMs might be determinants of host specificity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic Manipulation of the Fusarium fujikuroi Fusarin Gene Cluster Yields Insight into the Complex Regulation and Fusarin Biosynthetic Pathway
Eva-Maria Niehaus,Karin Kleigrewe,Philipp Wiemann,Lena Studt,Christian M. K. Sieber,Lanelle R. Connolly,Michael Freitag,Ulrich Güldener,Bettina Tudzynski,Hans-Ulrich Humpf +9 more
TL;DR: The combination of genetic engineering with nuclear magnetic resonance and mass-spectrometry-based structure elucidation allowed the discovery of the putative fusarin biosynthetic pathway.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of the fusaric acid gene cluster in Fusarium fujikuroi
Eva-Maria Niehaus,Katharina Walburga von Bargen,José J. Espino,Andreas Pfannmüller,Hans-Ulrich Humpf,Bettina Tudzynski +5 more
TL;DR: This study describes the identification and characterization of the fusaric acid gene cluster in F. fujikuroi consisting of the PKS-encoding core gene and four co-regulated genes, FUB1–FUB5, and suggests that only two genes,FUB1 and FUB4, are necessary for the biosynthesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Two Histone Deacetylases, FfHda1 and FfHda2, Are Important for Fusarium fujikuroi Secondary Metabolism and Virulence
Lena Studt,F. J. Schmidt,Leonie Johanna Jahn,Christian M. K. Sieber,Lanelle R. Connolly,Eva-Maria Niehaus,Michael Freitag,Hans-Ulrich Humpf,Bettina Tudzynski +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the involvement of histone deacetylases (HDACs) in secondary metabolism in the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium fujikuroi was studied.
