The role of historical fire disturbance in the carbon dynamics of the pan-boreal region: A process-based analysis
M. S. Balshi,A. D. McGuire,Qianlai Zhuang,Jerry M. Melillo,David W. Kicklighter,Eric S. Kasischke,Christian Wirth,Mike D. Flannigan,Jennifer W. Harden,Joy S. Clein,T. J. Burnside,J. McAllister,Werner A. Kurz,M.J. Apps,Anatoly Shvidenko +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the process-based terrestrial ecosystem model to simulate fire emissions and changes in carbon storage in northern high latitudes from the start of spatially explicit historically recorded fire records in the twentieth century through 2002.
Journal ArticleDOI
Functional traits explain light and size response of growth rates in tropical tree species
TL;DR: The analysis of decomposing growth rates of 171 Neotropical tree species into intrinsic growth and the response of growth to light and size yielded a predictive model that allows estimation of growth characteristics for rare species on the basis of a few easily measurable morphological traits.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biodiversity across trophic levels drives multifunctionality in highly diverse forests
Andreas Schuldt,Thorsten Assmann,Matteo Brezzi,Matteo Brezzi,François Buscot,David Eichenberg,Jessica L. M. Gutknecht,Werner Härdtle,Jin-Sheng He,Alexandra-Maria Klein,Peter Kühn,Xiaojuan Liu,Keping Ma,Pascal A. Niklaus,Katherina A. Pietsch,Witoon Purahong,Michael Scherer-Lorenzen,Bernhard Schmid,Thomas Scholten,Michael Staab,Zhiyao Tang,Stefan Trogisch,Stefan Trogisch,Goddert von Oheimb,Christian Wirth,Tesfaye Wubet,Chao-Dong Zhu,Helge Bruelheide +27 more
TL;DR: A multitrophic perspective is adopted to analyze how biodiversity affects multifunctionality in biodiverse subtropical forests and finds that biodiversity components other than tree species richness are particularly important, and higher trophic level diversity plays a role in multifunctional.
Journal ArticleDOI
BHPMF – a hierarchical Bayesian approach to gap-filling and trait prediction for macroecology and functional biogeography
Franziska Schrodt,Jens Kattge,Hanhuai Shan,Hanhuai Shan,Farideh Fazayeli,Julia Joswig,Arindam Banerjee,Markus Reichstein,Gerhard Bönisch,Sandra Díaz,John B. Dickie,Andy Gillison,Anuj Karpatne,Sandra Lavorel,Paul Leadley,Christian Wirth,Ian J. Wright,S. Joseph Wright,Peter B. Reich,Peter B. Reich +19 more
TL;DR: BHPMF and its derivatives have a high potential to support future trait-based research in macroecology and functional biogeography and are concluded to provide a robust measure of confidence in prediction accuracy for each missing entry.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global relationship of wood and leaf litter decomposability: the role of functional traits within and across plant organs
Katherina A. Pietsch,Kiona Ogle,Johannes H. C. Cornelissen,William K. Cornwell,William K. Cornwell,Gerhard Bönisch,Joseph M. Craine,Benjamin G. Jackson,Jens Kattge,Duane A. Peltzer,Josep Peñuelas,Peter B. Reich,Peter B. Reich,David A. Wardle,James T. Weedon,Ian J. Wright,Amy E. Zanne,Amy E. Zanne,Christian Wirth,Christian Wirth +19 more
TL;DR: Important relationships among wood and leaf litter decomposability as after-life effects of traits from the living plants are demonstrated as well as a better representation of decomposition rates in dynamic global vegetation models.
