Journal ArticleDOI
What is a pilot or feasibility study? A review of current practice and editorial policy.
TL;DR: Pilot studies are still poorly reported, with inappropriate emphasis on hypothesis-testing, and authors should be aware of the different requirements of pilot studies, feasibility studies and main studies and report them appropriately.
Journal ArticleDOI
Estimating the sample size for a pilot randomised trial to minimise the overall trial sample size for the external pilot and main trial for a continuous outcome variable
TL;DR: This paper looks at how to choose an external pilot trial sample size in order to minimise the sample size of the overall clinical trial programme, that is, the pilot and the main trial together, and produces a method of calculating the optimal solution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Consumer involvement in health research: a review and research agenda.
TL;DR: The involvement of consumers in health research is now Department of Health policy within the UK, and the state of knowledge on this issue is critically reviewed, and a research agenda is mapped out with the aim of stimulating systematic, empirical inquiry into consumer involvement in healthResearch.
Journal ArticleDOI
Computerised cognitive behaviour therapy (cCBT) as treatment for depression in primary care (REEACT trial): large scale pragmatic randomised controlled trial
Simon Gilbody,Elizabeth Littlewood,Catherine Hewitt,Gwen Brierley,Puvan Tharmanathan,Ricardo Araya,Michael Barkham,Peter Bower,Cindy Cooper,Linda Gask,David Kessler,Helen Lester,Karina Lovell,Glenys Parry,David Richards,Phil Andersen,Sally Brabyn,Sarah Knowles,Charles Shepherd,Debbie Tallon,David White +20 more
TL;DR: Neither a commercially available nor free to use computerised CBT intervention was superior to usual GP care, and findings cannot be generalised to cCBT offered with a much higher level of guidance and support.
Journal ArticleDOI
Informing efficient randomised controlled trials: exploration of challenges in developing progression criteria for internal pilot studies.
Kerry N L Avery,Paula R Williamson,Carrol Gamble,Elaine O'Connell Francischetto,Chris Metcalfe,Peter Davidson,Hywel C Williams,Jane M Blazeby,Natalie S Blencowe,Carol Bugge,Michael J. Campbell,Michelle Collinson,Cindy Cooper,Janet Darbyshire,Munya Dimairo,Caroline J Doré,Sandra Eldridge,Amanda Farrin,Nadine E. Foster,Simon Gilbody,Steve Goodacre,Lisa V. Hampson,Angelos G. Kolias,Sallie Lamb,Athene Lane,Lisa Maguire,John Norrie,Ruth M. Pickering,Gillian W Shorter,Shaun Treweek +29 more
TL;DR: Systematic and transparent reporting of the design, results and evaluation of internal pilot trials in the literature should be encouraged in order to facilitate understanding in the research community and to inform future trials.
