Journal ArticleDOI
Ecotoxicological aspects related to the presence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment
Lúcia Santos,Alberto N. Araújo,Adriano Fachini,A. Pena,Cristina Delerue-Matos,Maria C. B. S. M. Montenegro +5 more
TL;DR: An extensive review of existing data in the form of tables, encompassing many therapeutic classes is presented and the different contamination sources as well as fate and both acute and chronic effects on non-target organisms are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contribution of hospital effluents to the load of pharmaceuticals in urban wastewaters: Identification of ecologically relevant pharmaceuticals
Lúcia Santos,Meritxell Gros,Sara Rodríguez-Mozaz,Cristina Delerue-Matos,Angelina Pena,Damià Barceló,Damià Barceló,M. Conceição B. S. M. Montenegro +7 more
TL;DR: Analysis of individual contributions of each therapeutic group showed that NSAIDs, analgesics and antibiotics are among the groups with the highest inputs, showing that pharmaceuticals are widespread pollutants in both hospital and urban wastewaters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic levels in three pelagic fish species from the Atlantic Ocean: intra- and inter-specific variability and human health risks for consumption.
Catarina Vieira,Simone Morais,Sandra Ramos,Cristina Delerue-Matos,Maria Beatriz P.P. Oliveira +4 more
TL;DR: Intra- and inter-specific variability of metals bioaccumulation was statistically assessed and species and length revealed to be the major influencing biometric factors, in particular for mercury and arsenic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Green production of zero-valent iron nanoparticles using tree leaf extracts
Susana Machado,S. L. Pinto,J. P. Grosso,Henri P. A. Nouws,José Tomás Albergaria,Cristina Delerue-Matos +5 more
TL;DR: TEM analysis proves that nZVIs (d=10-20 nm) can be produced using the tree leaf extracts, and the results show that dried leaves produce extracts with higher antioxidant capacities than non-dried leaves.
Journal ArticleDOI
Presence of pharmaceuticals in the Lis river (Portugal): Sources, fate and seasonal variation
Paula Paíga,Lúcia Santos,Sandra Ramos,Sandra Jorge,Jaime Gabriel Silva,Cristina Delerue-Matos +5 more
TL;DR: Findings show that further studies embracing different environmental compartments are needed, in order to evaluate the partition/distribution of pharmaceuticals, their metabolites and transformation products in the environment as well as to predict their possible impact to non-target organisms and, in a last instance, to human health.
