Journal ArticleDOI
The type Ia supernova SNLS-03D3bb from a super-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf star
D. Andrew Howell,Mark Sullivan,Peter Nugent,Richard S. Ellis,Alex Conley,Damien Le Borgne,Raymond G. Carlberg,Julien Guy,David D. Balam,Stéphane Basa,D. Fouchez,Isobel Hook,Eric Hsiao,James D. Neill,Reynald Pain,K. Perrett,Christopher J. Pritchet +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the high-redshift supernova SNLS-03D3bb has an exceptionally high luminosity and low kinetic energy that both imply a super-Chandrasekhar-mass progenitor, which may provide an explanation for the observed trend that overluminous type Ia supernovae occur only in ‘young’ environments.
Journal ArticleDOI
RED NUGGETS AT z ∼ 1.5: COMPACT PASSIVE GALAXIES AND THE FORMATION OF THE KORMENDY RELATION
Ivana Damjanov,Patrick J. McCarthy,Roberto Abraham,Karl Glazebrook,Haojing Yan,Erin Mentuch,Damien Le Borgne,Sandra Savaglio,David Crampton,Richard Murowinski,Stéphanie Juneau,Raymond G. Carlberg,Inger Jorgensen,Kathy Roth,Hsiao-Wen Chen,Ronald O. Marzke +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented the results of Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) imaging of a sample of 19 high-mass passively evolving galaxies with 1.2 < z < 2, taken primarily from the Gemini Deep Deep Survey (GDDS).
Journal ArticleDOI
A unified empirical model for infrared galaxy counts based on observed physical evolution of distant galaxies
Matthieu Béthermin,Emanuele Daddi,Georgios E. Magdis,Mark Sargent,Yashar D. Hezaveh,David Elbaz,Damien Le Borgne,James Mullaney,Maurilio Pannella,Veronique Buat,Vassilis Charmandaris,Guilaine Lagache,Douglas Scott +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reproduce the mid-infrared to radio galaxy counts with a new empirical model based on their current understanding of the evolution of main-sequence (MS) and starburst (SB) galaxies.
Journal ArticleDOI
GOODS-HERSCHEL: star formation, dust attenuation and the FIR-radio correlation on the Main Sequence of star-forming galaxies up to z~4
Maurilio Pannella,David Elbaz,Emanuele Daddi,Mark Dickinson,Ho Seong Hwang,Corentin Schreiber,Veronica Strazzullo,Herve Aussel,Matthieu Béthermin,Veronique Buat,Vassilis Charmandaris,Anna Cibinel,Stéphanie Juneau,Rob Ivison,Damien Le Borgne,Emeric Le Floc'h,Roger Leiton,Lihwai Lin,Georgios E. Magdis,Glenn Morrison,James Mullaney,Masato Onodera,Alvio Renzini,Samir Salim,Mark Sargent,Douglas Scott,Xinwen Shu,Tao Wang +27 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the evolution of the star formation activity and dust attenuation of star-forming galaxies to z~4 using deep panchromatic datasets in the GOODS-N field, from GALEX to the deepest Herschel far-infrared and VLA radio continuum imaging.
