Response of mountain Picea abies forests to stand‐replacing bark beetle outbreaks: neighbourhood effects lead to self‐replacement
Thorsten Zeppenfeld,Thorsten Zeppenfeld,Miroslav Svoboda,Robert J. DeRose,Marco Heurich,Jörg Müller,Jörg Müller,Pavla Čížková,Martin Starý,Radek Bače,Daniel C. Donato,Daniel C. Donato +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, a series of large, severe ( 99% overstorey mortality) outbreaks of spruce bark beetles Ips typographus in Central Europe was investigated, and the authors used a forest inventory data set to evaluate regeneration dynamics in Norway spruce Picea abies forests across the Bohemian Forest Ecosystem (spanning Germany and the Czech Republic).
Journal ArticleDOI
Estimating retention benchmarks for salvage logging to protect biodiversity.
Simon Thorn,Anne Chao,Kostadin B. Georgiev,Kostadin B. Georgiev,Jörg Müller,Jörg Müller,Claus Bässler,John Campbell,Jorge Castro,Yan‐Han Chen,Chang-Yong Choi,Tyler P. Cobb,Daniel C. Donato,Ewa Durska,Ellen Macdonald,Heike Feldhaar,Joseph B. Fontaine,Paula J. Fornwalt,Raquel María Hernández Hernández,Richard L. Hutto,Matti Koivula,Eun-Jae Lee,David B. Lindenmayer,Grzegorz Mikusiński,Martin K. Obrist,Michal Perlík,Michal Perlík,Josep Rost,Kaysandra Waldron,Beat Wermelinger,Ingmar Weiß,Michał Żmihorski,Alexandro B. Leverkus,Alexandro B. Leverkus +33 more
TL;DR: A mixed rarefaction/extrapolation approach to a global multi-taxa dataset from disturbed forests, including birds, plants, insects and fungi, finds that 75 ± 7% of a naturally disturbed area of a forest needs to be left unlogged to maintain 90% richness of its unique species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biological associates of early-seral pre-forest in the Pacific Northwest
TL;DR: It is suggested that naturally structured early-seral pre-forests in the PNW provide key habitat for many species, including obligates and near-obligates, and that future research should seek to refine the understanding of the specific structural and compositional attributes that form the basis of these associations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sedimentation and belowground carbon accumulation rates in mangrove forests that differ in diversity and land use: a tale of two mangroves
Richard A. MacKenzie,Patra B. Foulk,J. Val Klump,Kimberly Weckerly,Joko Purbospito,Daniel Murdiyarso,Daniel C. Donato,Vien Ngoc Nam +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured sedimentation, vertical accretion, and belowground carbon accumulation rates in mangrove forests from the Republic of Palau and Vietnam to examine how diversity (high-Vietnam vs. low-Palau), land use, and location (fringe vs. interior) might influence these parameters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multi-taxon alpha diversity following bark beetle disturbance: Evaluating multi-decade persistence of a diverse early-seral phase
Maria Barbara Winter,Christian Ammer,Roland Baier,Daniel C. Donato,Sabastian Seibold,Sabastian Seibold,Jörg Müller,Jörg Müller +7 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that in unmanaged forests after bark beetle attack, a structurally complex phase prior to tree canopy closure can last several decades, and that many aspects of early-seral biodiversity and ecosystem function only fully develop given this extended time period.
