Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular evolution of a gene cluster of serine proteases expressed in the Anopheles gambiae female reproductive tract
Emiliano Mancini,F. Tammaro,Francesco Baldini,Allegra Via,Domenico Raimondo,Phillip George,Paolo Audisio,Igor V. Sharakhov,Anna Tramontano,Flaminia Catteruccia,Flaminia Catteruccia,Alessandra della Torre +11 more
TL;DR: The analysis of polymorphisms and divergence of these female-expressed proteases in closely related species of the A. gambiae complex revealed a high level of replacement polymorphisms consistent with relaxed evolutionary constraints of duplicated genes, allowing to rapidly fix novel replacements to perform new or more specific functions.
Journal ArticleDOI
The implications of alternative splicing in the ENCODE protein complement
Michael L. Tress,Pier Luigi Martelli,Adam Frankish,Gabrielle A. Reeves,Jan-Jaap Wesselink,Corin Yeats,Páll ĺsólfur Ólason,Mario Albrecht,Hedi Hegyi,Alejandro Giorgetti,Domenico Raimondo,Julien Lagarde,Roman A. Laskowski,Gonzalo Lopez,Michael I. Sadowski,James D. Watson,Piero Fariselli,Ivan Rossi,Alinda Nagy,Wang Kai,Zenia M Størling,Massimiliano Orsini,Yassen Assenov,Hagen Blankenburg,Carola Huthmacher,Fidel Ramírez,Andreas Schlicker,Phil Jones,Samuel Kerrien,Sandra Orchard,Stylianos E. Antonarakis,Alexandre Reymond,Ewan Birney,Søren Brunak,Rita Casadio,Roderic Guigó,Jennifer Harrow,Henning Hermjakob,David T. Jones,Thomas Lengauer,Christine A. Orengo,László Patthy,Janet M. Thornton,Anna Tramontano,Alfonso Valencia +44 more
TL;DR: It is found that alternative splicing in human genes is more frequent than has commonly been suggested, and it is demonstrated that many of the potential alternative gene products will have markedly different structure and function from their constitutively spliced counterparts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protein function annotation by homology-based inference
Yaniv Loewenstein,Domenico Raimondo,Oliver C. Redfern,James D. Watson,Dmitrij Frishman,Michal Linial,Christine A. Orengo,Janet M. Thornton,Anna Tramontano +8 more
TL;DR: Progress in the automated prediction of protein function based on protein sequence and structure is reviewed in the BioSapiens Network.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cancer-Selective Targeting of the NF-κB Survival Pathway with GADD45β/MKK7 Inhibitors
Laura Tornatore,Annamaria Sandomenico,Domenico Raimondo,Caroline M. R. Low,Alberto Rocci,Catherine Tralau-Stewart,Daria Capece,Daniel D'Andrea,Marco Bua,Eileen M Boyle,Mark van Duin,Pietro Zoppoli,Albert Jaxa-Chamiec,Anil K. Thotakura,Julian Dyson,Brian A Walker,Antonio Leonardi,Angela Chambery,Christoph Driessen,Pieter Sonneveld,Gareth J. Morgan,Antonio Palumbo,Anna Tramontano,Amin Rahemtulla,Menotti Ruvo,Guido Franzoso +25 more
TL;DR: DTP3 has similar anticancer potency to the clinical standard, bortezomib, but more than 100-fold higher cancer cell specificity in vitro, suggesting cancer-selective targeting of the NF-κB pathway is possible and, at least for myeloma patients, promises a profound benefit.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluating the usefulness of protein structure models for molecular replacement
TL;DR: There is a correlation between the quality of models of protein structure and their suitability for molecular replacement but that the traditional method of relying on sequence identity between the model and the template used to build it is not diagnostic for the success of the procedure.
