Journal ArticleDOI
Circulating erythrocyte-derived microparticles are associated with coagulation activation in sickle cell disease
Eduard J. van Beers,Marianne C. L. Schaap,R.J. Berckmans,Rienk Nieuwland,Augueste Sturk,Frederiek F. van Doormaal,Joost C. M. Meijers,Bart J. Biemond +7 more
TL;DR: The authors conclude that the procoagulant state in sickle cell disease is partially explained by the factor XI-dependent procoAGulant properties of circulating erythrocyte-derived microparticles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical spectrum of pyruvate kinase deficiency: data from the Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency Natural History Study.
Rachael F. Grace,Paola Bianchi,Eduard J. van Beers,Stefan W. Eber,Bertil Glader,Hassan M. Yaish,Jenny M. Despotovic,Jennifer A. Rothman,Mukta Sharma,Melissa M. McNaull,Elisa Fermo,Kimberly Lezon-Geyda,D. Holmes Morton,D. Holmes Morton,Ellis J. Neufeld,Satheesh Chonat,Nina Kollmar,Christine M. Knoll,Kevin H.M. Kuo,Janet L. Kwiatkowski,Dagmar Pospisilova,Yves D. Pastore,Alexis A. Thompson,Peter E. Newburger,Yaddanapudi Ravindranath,Winfred C. Wang,Marcin W. Wlodarski,Heng Wang,Susanne Holzhauer,Vicky R. Breakey,Joachim B. Kunz,Sujit Sheth,Melissa J. Rose,Heather A. Bradeen,Nolan Neu,Dongjing Guo,Hasan Al-Sayegh,Wendy B. London,Patrick G. Gallagher,Alberto Zanella,Wilma Barcellini +40 more
TL;DR: Although the risk of complications increases with severity of anemia and a genotype-phenotype relationship was observed, complications were common in all patients with PK deficiency and diagnostic testing for PK deficiency should be considered in patients with apparent congenital hemolytic anemia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Safety and efficacy of mitapivat in pyruvate kinase deficiency
Rachael F. Grace,Christian Rose,D. Mark Layton,Frédéric Galactéros,Wilma Barcellini,D. Holmes Morton,Eduard J. van Beers,Hassan M. Yaish,Yaddanapudi Ravindranath,Kevin H.M. Kuo,Sujit Sheth,Janet L. Kwiatkowski,Ann J Barbier,Susan Bodie,Bruce Silver,Lei Hua,Charles Kung,Peter Hawkins,Marie Hélène Jouvin,Chris Bowden,Bertil Glader +20 more
TL;DR: The administration of mitapivat was associated with a rapid increase in the hemoglobin level in 50% of adults with pyruvate kinase deficiency, with a sustained response during a median follow-up of 29 months during the extension phase.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patient-controlled analgesia versus continuous infusion of morphine during vaso-occlusive crisis in sickle cell disease, a randomized controlled trial.
Eduard J. van Beers,Charlotte F.J. van Tuijn,Pythia T. Nieuwkerk,Philip W. Friederich,J. H. Vranken,Bart J. Biemond +5 more
TL;DR: Patient‐controlled analgesia (PCA) results in adequate pain relief at a much lower morphine consumption and should considered to be the first choice in morphine administration to sickle cell patients admitted with vaso‐occlusive crisis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Iron, Inflammation, and Early Death in Adults with Sickle Cell Disease
Eduard J. van Beers,Yanqin Yang,Nalini Raghavachari,Xin Tian,Darlene Allen,James S. Nichols,Laurel Mendelsohn,Sergei Nekhai,Victor R. Gordeuk,VI James G. Taylor,Gregory J. Kato +10 more
TL;DR: The results support a model in which intracellular iron promotes inflammatory pathways, such as the TLR system and the inflammasome, identifying important new pathways for additional investigation.
