Journal ArticleDOI
Selective preservation of organic matter in marine environments; processes and impact on the sedimentary record
Karin A F Zonneveld,Gerard J M Versteegh,Sabine Kasten,Timothy I. Eglinton,Kay-Christian Emeis,Carme Huguet,Boris P. Koch,G. J. de Lange,J.W. de Leeuw,Jack J. Middelburg,Gesine Mollenhauer,Fredrick G. Prahl,Janet Rethemeyer,Stuart G. Wakeham +13 more
TL;DR: The main theme of the workshop as discussed by the authors was to understand the impact of selective degradation/preservation of organic matter (OM) in marine sediments on the interpretation of the fossil record, including the influence of the molecular composition of OM in relation to the biological and physical depositional environment, including new methods for determining complex organic biomolecules.
Journal ArticleDOI
Magnetostratigraphy and astronomical calibration of the last 1.1 Myr from an eastern Mediterranean piston core and dating of short events in the Brunhes
TL;DR: In this article, a 37 m long piston core (KC-O1B) was collected from the Calabrian Ridge in the Ionian Sea, and the authors used the oxygen isotope data as an additional constraint on their age model.
Journal ArticleDOI
Redistribution and geochemical behaviour of redox-sensitive elements around S1, the most recent eastern Mediterranean sapropel
TL;DR: In this article, the distribution of redox-sensitive elements above, in and below the sharply defined, organic-rich unit reveal that S 1 has already suffered heavy diagenetic alteration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Post-depositional stability of long-chain alkenones under contrasting redox conditions
TL;DR: In this article, the long-chain alkenone composition of sediment samples from above and below an oxidation front in an ungraded turbidite layer in the Madeira Abyssal Plain was analyzed to evaluate the postdepositional stability of these biomarkers under contrasting redox conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Active post-depositional oxidation of the most recent sapropel (S1) in sediments of the eastern Mediterranean Sea
P.J.M. van Santvoort,G. J. de Lange,John Thomson,H. Cussen,T.R.S. Wilson,Michael D. Krom,K. Ströhle +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a barium-organic carbon relationship is used to calculate the initial organic carbon profile of the S1 sapropel and the palaeoproductivity profiles generated by this method demonstrate that the original sapropels unit was bounded by the upper Mn peak.
