Journal ArticleDOI
Duration of efficacy of treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in HIV-infected adults.
John L. Johnson,Alphonse Okwera,David L. Hom,Harriet Mayanja,Cissy Kityo,Peter Nsubuga,J. G. Nakibali,Anita M. Loughlin,Hyun Yun,Peter Mugyenyi,Andrew Vernon,Roy D. Mugerwa,Jerrold J. Ellner,Christopher C. Whalen +13 more
TL;DR: Six months of INH provided short-term protection against tuberculosis in PPD-positive HIV-infected adults; however, benefit was lost within the first year of treatment and sustained protection for up to 3 years was observed in persons receiving 3HR and 3HRZ.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immunogenicity of novel DosR regulon-encoded candidate antigens of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in three high-burden populations in Africa.
Gillian F. Black,Bonnie Thiel,Martin O. C. Ota,Shreemanta K. Parida,Richard A. Adegbola,W. Henry Boom,W. Henry Boom,Hazel M. Dockrell,Kees L. M. C. Franken,Annemiek H. Friggen,Philip C. Hill,Michèl R. Klein,Maeve K. Lalor,Harriet Mayanja,Gary K. Schoolnik,Kim Stanley,Karin Weldingh,Stefan H. E. Kaufmann,Gerhard Walzl,Tom H. M. Ottenhoff +19 more
TL;DR: Significant similarities in antigen recognition profiles between the three African population groups were found, but there were also disparities, which may stem from genetic differences between both pathogen and host populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic survey of the non-cultivatable opportunistic human pathogen, Enterocytozoon bieneusi
Donna E. Akiyoshi,Hilary G. Morrison,Shi Lei,Xiaochuan Feng,Quanshun Zhang,Nicolas Corradi,Harriet Mayanja,James K Tumwine,Patrick J. Keeling,Louis M. Weiss,Saul Tzipori +10 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that E. bieneusi is a likely model for extreme genome reduction and host dependence, and short intergenic regions, high gene density, and shortened protein-coding sequences were observed in the E. biosporidian genome, all traits consistent with genomic compaction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Response to antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients attending a public, urban clinic in Kampala, Uganda.
Lisa A. Spacek,Hasan M Shihab,Moses R. Kamya,Doris Mwesigire,Allan R. Ronald,Harriet Mayanja,Richard D. Moore,Michael Bates,Thomas C. Quinn,Thomas C. Quinn +9 more
TL;DR: Although many HIV-infected people treated in Kampala, Uganda, have advanced HIV disease, the majority of patients who received antiretroviral therapy experienced viral suppression and clinical benefit.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antiretroviral therapy and sexual behavior: A comparative study between antiretroviral-naive and -experienced patients at an urban HIV/AIDS care and research center in Kampala, Uganda
Moses Bateganya,Grant Colfax,Leigh Anne Shafer,Cissy Kityo,Peter Mugyenyi,David Serwadda,Harriet Mayanja,David R. Bangsberg +7 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that in this population, use of ARV therapy was not associated with risky sexual behavior in the prior 6 months, and recall and social desirability biases remain important limitations in interpreting these conclusions.
