A European aerosol phenomenology—1: physical characteristics of particulate matter at kerbside, urban, rural and background sites in Europe
Rita Van Dingenen,Frank Raes,Jean-P Putaud,Urs Baltensperger,Aurélie Charron,M.Cristina Facchini,Stefano Decesari,Sandro Fuzzi,Robert Gehrig,Hans-C Hansson,Roy M. Harrison,Cristoph Hüglin,Alan M. Jones,Paolo Laj,Gundi Lorbeer,Willy Maenhaut,Finn Palmgren,Xavier Querol,Sergio Rodríguez,Jürgen Schneider,Harry ten Brink,Peter Tunved,Kjetil Tørseth,Birgit Wehner,Ernest Weingartner,Alfred Wiedensohler,Peter Wåhlin +26 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesize data on aerosol physical characteristics, which were obtained in European aerosol research activities at free-troposphere, natural, rural, near-city, urban, and kerbside sites over the past decade.
Journal ArticleDOI
Black carbon as an additional indicator of the adverse health effects of airborne particles compared with PM10 and PM2.5.
Nicole A.H. Janssen,Gerard Hoek,Milena Simic-Lawson,Paul Fischer,Leendert van Bree,Harry ten Brink,Menno Keuken,Richard Atkinson,H. Ross Anderson,Bert Brunekreef,Flemming R. Cassee +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the potential health benefits of a hypothetical traffic abatement measure, using near-roadway concentration increments of BCP and PM2.5 based on data from prior studies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of particulate air pollution on blood pressure and heart rate in subjects with cardiovascular disease: a multicenter approach.
Angela Ibald-Mulli,Kirsi L. Timonen,Annette Peters,Joachim Heinrich,Gabriele Wölke,Timo Lanki,G. Buzorius,Wolfgang G. Kreyling,Jeroen J. de Hartog,Gerard Hoek,Harry ten Brink,Juha Pekkanen +11 more
TL;DR: The results do not support findings from previous studies that had shown an increase in blood pressure and heart rate in healthy individuals in association with particles, and particle effects might differ in cardiac patients because of medication intake and disease status, both affecting the autonomic control of the heart.
Journal ArticleDOI
Indoor-outdoor relationships of particle number and mass in four European cities
Gerard Hoek,Gerard Kos,Roy M. Harrison,Jeroen J. de Hartog,Kees Meliefste,Harry ten Brink,Klea Katsouyanni,Anna Karakatsani,Maria Lianou,Anastasia Kotronarou,Ilias G. Kavouras,Juha Pekkanen,Marko Vallius,Markku Kulmala,Arto Puustinen,Steve Thomas,Claire Meddings,Jon Ayres,Jon Ayres,Joop H. van Wijnen,Kaarle Hämeri,Kaarle Hämeri +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, the impact of indoor sources and outdoor air on indoor pollution is discussed, and a model of indoor PM concentrations is presented, illustrating the factors that affect indoor air quality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial variation of particle number and mass over four European cities
Arto Puustinen,Kaarle Hämeri,Kaarle Hämeri,Juha Pekkanen,Markku Kulmala,Jeroen J. de Hartog,Kees Meliefste,Harry ten Brink,Gerard Kos,Klea Katsouyanni,Anna Karakatsani,Anastasia Kotronarou,Ilias G. Kavouras,Claire Meddings,Steve Thomas,Roy M. Harrison,Jon G Ayres,Saskia C. van der Zee,Gerard Hoek +18 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the temporal and spatial variation of PNC compared to the mass concentration of particles with diameter less than 10 or 2.5 µm (PM10 and PM2.5) in four cities spread over Europe (Amsterdam, Athens, Birmingham and Helsinki).
