A European aerosol phenomenology—1: physical characteristics of particulate matter at kerbside, urban, rural and background sites in Europe
Rita Van Dingenen,Frank Raes,Jean-P Putaud,Urs Baltensperger,Aurélie Charron,M.Cristina Facchini,Stefano Decesari,Sandro Fuzzi,Robert Gehrig,Hans-C Hansson,Roy M. Harrison,Cristoph Hüglin,Alan M. Jones,Paolo Laj,Gundi Lorbeer,Willy Maenhaut,Finn Palmgren,Xavier Querol,Sergio Rodríguez,Jürgen Schneider,Harry ten Brink,Peter Tunved,Kjetil Tørseth,Birgit Wehner,Ernest Weingartner,Alfred Wiedensohler,Peter Wåhlin +26 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesize data on aerosol physical characteristics, which were obtained in European aerosol research activities at free-troposphere, natural, rural, near-city, urban, and kerbside sites over the past decade.
Journal ArticleDOI
Source apportionment of particulate matter in Europe: A review of methods and results
Mar Viana,Thomas A. J. Kuhlbusch,Xavier Querol,Andrés Alastuey,Roy M. Harrison,Philip K. Hopke,Wilfried Winiwarter,M Vallius,Sönke Szidat,André S. H. Prévôt,Christoph Hueglin,H Bloemen,Peter Wåhlin,Roberta Vecchi,Ana Isabel Miranda,Anne Kasper-Giebl,Willy Maenhaut,Regina Hitzenberger +17 more
TL;DR: A review of the most commonly used SA methods in Europe, their comparability and results, and to evaluate current trends and identify possible gaps of the methods and future research directions is presented in this article.
Journal ArticleDOI
Particle and trace gas emission factors under urban driving conditions in Copenhagen based on street and roof-level observations
TL;DR: In this article, simultaneous measurements of particle size distribution inside an urban street canyon and a nearby urban background location in Copenhagen in May-November 2001 were used to separate the traffic source contribution in the street canyon from the background levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Indoor particles affect vascular function in the aged: an air filtration-based intervention study.
Elvira Vaclavik Bräuner,Lykke Forchhammer,Peter Møller,Lars Barregard,Lars Gunnarsen,Alireza Afshari,Peter Wåhlin,Marianne Glasius,Lars O. Dragsted,Samar Basu,Ole Raaschou-Nielsen,Steffen Loft +11 more
TL;DR: Reduction of particle exposure by filtration of recirculated indoor air for only 48 hours improved microvascular function in healthy elderly citizens, suggesting that this may be a feasible way of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to ultrafine particles from ambient air and oxidative stress-induced DNA damage.
Elvira Vaclavik Bräuner,Lykke Forchhammer,Peter Møller,Jacob Simonsen,Marianne Glasius,Peter Wåhlin,Ole Raaschou-Nielsen,Steffen Loft +7 more
TL;DR: It is indicated that UFPs, especially the 57-nm soot fraction from vehicle emissions, causes systemic oxidative stress with damage to DNA and no apparent compensatory up-regulation of DNA repair within 24 hr.
