Shortfalls and Solutions for Meeting National and Global Conservation Area Targets

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimate that PAs currently cover 14.6% of terrestrial and 2.8% of marine extent, but 59-68% of ecoregions, 77-78% of important sites for biodiversity, and 57% of 25,380 species have inadequate coverage.
Journal ArticleDOI

High value and long life - Double jeopardy for tunas and billfishes

TL;DR: The first standardized, global assessment of these fishes, using Red List criteria, reveals threatened species needing protection and prompts a need for alternative means of assessment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global conservation status and research needs for tarpons (Megalopidae), ladyfishes (Elopidae) and bonefishes (Albulidae)

TL;DR: The taxonomic diversity, geographic distributions, life history, ecology and fisheries of tarpons, ladyfishes and bonefishes (members of the subdivision Elopomorpha), which share many life history and habitat use characteristics that make them vulnerable to environmental and anthropogenic stresses in coastal environments, were assessed in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Importance of low salinity areas for juvenile blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, in river-dominated estuaries of southeastern United States

TL;DR: Lower salinity regions of the small, river-dominated estuaries of southeastern United States may be utilized as important nursery areas, may be associated with increased growth and reduced predation, and may represent a vital habitat for maintenance of local blue crab populations.
