TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimate that PAs currently cover 14.6% of terrestrial and 2.8% of marine extent, but 59-68% of ecoregions, 77-78% of important sites for biodiversity, and 57% of 25,380 species have inadequate coverage.

TL;DR: To be more successful after 2020, area-based conservation must contribute more effectively to meeting global biodiversity goals-ranging from preventing extinctions to retaining the most-intact ecosystems-and must better collaborate with the many Indigenous peoples, community groups and private initiatives that are central to the successful conservation of biodiversity.

A global map of saltmarshes.
Chris McOwen,Lauren V. Weatherdon,Jan Willem Van Bochove,Emma Sullivan,Simon Blyth,Christoph Zöckler,Damon Stanwell-Smith,Naomi Kingston,Corinne S. Martin,Mark Spalding,Steve Fletcher +10 more
TL;DR: This dataset collates 350,985 individual occurrences of saltmarshes and presents the first global estimate of their known extent, and believes that, while incomplete, the global polygon data cover many of the important areas in Europe, the USA and Australia.
Journal ArticleDOI
People have shaped most of terrestrial nature for at least 12,000 years

Kaplan,Naomi Kingston,Harvey Locke,Crystal N. H. McMichael,Darren Ranco,Torben C. Rick,M. Rebecca Shaw,Lucas Stephens,Jens-Christian Svenning,James E. M. Watson,James E. M. Watson +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use the most up-to-date, spatially explicit global reconstruction of historical human populations and land use to show that this paradigm is likely wrong.
