Journal ArticleDOI
Acceleration of cyanobacterial dominance in north temperate-subarctic lakes during the Anthropocene.
Zofia E. Taranu,Irene Gregory-Eaves,Peter R. Leavitt,Lynda Bunting,Teresa Buchaca,Jordi Catalan,Isabelle Domaizon,Piero Guilizzoni,Andrea Lami,Suzanne McGowan,Suzanne McGowan,Heather Moorhouse,Giuseppe Morabito,Frances R. Pick,Mark A. Stevenson,Patrick L. Thompson,Rolf D. Vinebrooke +16 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that cyanobacterial biomass has declined in some managed lakes with reduced nutrient influx, and the larger spatio-temporal scale of sedimentary records show continued increases in cyanobacteria throughout the north temperate-subarctic regions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deciphering long-term records of natural variability and human impact as recorded in lake sediments: a palaeolimnological puzzle
Keely Mills,Daniel Schillereff,Émilie Saulnier-Talbot,Peter Gell,N. John Anderson,Fabien Arnaud,Xuhui Dong,Xuhui Dong,Matthew Jones,Suzanne McGowan,Julieta Massaferro,Heather Moorhouse,Liseth Pérez,David B. Ryves +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the nature of how climate and human impacts are recorded in lake sediments is often ambiguous, which is an issue that is particularly acute when considering management options for aquatic ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecological resilience in lakes and the conjunction fallacy.
Bryan M. Spears,Martyn N. Futter,Erik Jeppesen,Erik Jeppesen,Brian J. Huser,Stephen C. Ives,Thomas Davidson,Rita Adrian,Rita Adrian,David G. Angeler,Sarah J. Burthe,Laurence Carvalho,Francis Daunt,Alena S. Gsell,Dag O. Hessen,Annette B.G. Janssen,Eleanor B. Mackay,Linda May,Heather Moorhouse,Saara Olsen,Saara Olsen,Martin Søndergaard,Martin Søndergaard,Helen Woods,Stephen J. Thackeray +24 more
TL;DR: A more rigorous logical approach is called for when translating research into management decisions on the basis of ecological stability and resilience theory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contrasting community assembly processes structure lotic bacteria metacommunities along the river continuum
Hyun S. Gweon,Michael J. Bowes,Heather Moorhouse,Anna Oliver,Mark J. Bailey,Mike Acreman,Daniel S. Read +6 more
TL;DR: While the mobile free‐living and particle‐associated communities were consistently less diverse than the fixed sediment and biofilm communities, the latter two communities displayed higher homogeneity across the sampling sites, indicating that the relative influence of deterministic environmental filtering is elevated in sediment andBiofilm communities compared with free‐ living and particle-associated communities, where stochastic processes play a larger role.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterisation of a major phytoplankton bloom in the River Thames (UK) using flow cytometry and high performance liquid chromatography.
Heather Moorhouse,Daniel S. Read,Suzanne McGowan,Markus Wagner,C. Roberts,L.K. Armstrong,David J. E. Nicholls,Heather Wickham,Mike Hutchins,Michael J. Bowes +9 more
TL;DR: P pigment analysis by high performance liquid chromatography and cell counting by flow cytometry, alongside traditional chlorophyll spectrophotometry and light microscopy screening, are used to characterise the major phytoplankton bloom of 2015 in the River Thames, UK, to offer rapid and cost-effective characterisation of phy Topolankton communities at appropriate timescales.
