TL;DR: Using a set of criteria designed to identify realistic and achievable research goals, questions were selected from a pool submitted by the international palaeoecology research community and relevant policy practitioners to highlight its potential for addressing both pure and applied issues related to ecological science and global change.
Journal ArticleDOI
First human impacts and responses of aquatic systems: A review of palaeolimnological records from around the world
Nathalie Dubois,Nathalie Dubois,Émilie Saulnier-Talbot,Keely Mills,Peter Gell,Richard W. Battarbee,Helen Bennion,Sakonvan Chawchai,Xuhui Dong,Pierre Francus,Roger J. Valero-Garcés +27 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the timing and onset of human disturbance in and around inland water ecosystems as revealed through sedimentary archives from around the world, and provide access to a wealth of information reflecting early human activities and their corresponding aquatic ecological shifts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deciphering long-term records of natural variability and human impact as recorded in lake sediments: a palaeolimnological puzzle
Keely Mills,Daniel Schillereff,Émilie Saulnier-Talbot,Peter Gell,N. John Anderson,Fabien Arnaud,Xuhui Dong,Xuhui Dong,Matthew Jones,Suzanne McGowan,Julieta Massaferro,Heather Moorhouse,Liseth Pérez,David B. Ryves +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the nature of how climate and human impacts are recorded in lake sediments is often ambiguous, which is an issue that is particularly acute when considering management options for aquatic ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Abrupt onset of carbonate deposition in Lake Kivu during the 1960s: response to recent environmental changes
Natacha Pasche,Natacha Pasche,Georges Alunga,Keely Mills,Keely Mills,Fabrice A. Muvundja,David B. Ryves,Michael Schurter,Bernhard Wehrli,Bernhard Wehrli,Martin Schmid +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors interpret the recent history of Lake Kivu, a tropical lake in the East African Rift Valley, using a moored sediment trap array deployed over two years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental change over the last millennium recorded in two contrasting crater lakes in western Uganda, eastern Africa (Lakes Kasenda and Wandakara)
David B. Ryves,Keely Mills,Ole Bennike,Klaus P. Brodersen,Angela L. Lamb,Melanie J. Leng,James M. Russell,Immaculate Ssemmanda +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compare sediment records from two small, nearby, closed crater lakes in western Uganda (Kasenda and Lake Wandakara), spanning the last 700 (Wandakara) and the last 1200 years, respectively, and suggest that lake levels were low from ∼AD 700-1000 AD, with increasing aridity from AD 1100-1600, and brief wet phases around AD 1000 and 1400.
