Enhanced Open Ocean Storage of CO2 from Shelf Sea Pumping
TL;DR: In this paper, seasonal field observations show that the North Sea, a Northern European shelf sea, is highly efficient in pumping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the North Atlantic Ocean.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wong,Hisayuki Yoshikawa-Inoue +91 more
TL;DR: The surface ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) project as discussed by the authors provides a publicly available, regularly updated, global data set of marine surface CO2, which had been subject to quality control (QC).
Journal ArticleDOI
Enhanced ocean carbon storage from anaerobic alkalinity generation in coastal sediments
Helmuth Thomas,L.-S. Schiettecatte,K. Suykens,Y. J. M. Koné,Elizabeth H. Shadwick,A. E. F. Prowe,A. E. F. Prowe,Yann Bozec,H. J. W. de Baar,Alberto Borges +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, anaerobic degradation of organic matter, fuelled from land and ocean, generates total alkalinity (AT) and increases the CO2 buffer capacity of seawater.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Carbon budget of the North Sea
Helmuth Thomas,Yann Bozec,H. J. W. de Baar,K. Elkalay,Michel Frankignoulle,L.-S. Schiettecatte,Gerhard Kattner,Alberto Borges +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a carbon budget for the North Sea, a shelf sea on the NW European continental shelf, has been established, where carbon exchange fluxes with the North Atlantic Ocean dominate the gross carbon budget.
Journal ArticleDOI
The seasonal cycle of carbon dioxide in Baltic Sea surface waters
Helmuth Thomas,Bernd Schneider +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed analysis of the seasonal cycle of carbon dioxide (CO2) within the surface waters of the Baltic Proper is presented based on the data sets of two cruises during winter and summer, a model has been developed interpolating the annual cycles of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2).
