Forward-genetics analysis of sleep in randomly mutagenized mice
Hiromasa Funato,Hiromasa Funato,Chika Miyoshi,Tomoyuki Fujiyama,Takeshi Kanda,Makito Sato,Makito Sato,Zhiqiang Wang,Jing Ma,Shin Nakane,Jun Tomita,Aya Ikkyu,Miyo Kakizaki,Noriko Hotta-Hirashima,Satomi Kanno,Haruna Komiya,Fuyuki Asano,Takato Honda,Staci Jakyong Kim,Kanako Harano,Hiroki Muramoto,Toshiya Yonezawa,Seiya Mizuno,Shinichi Miyazaki,Linzi Connor,Vivek Kumar,Ikuo Miura,Tomohiro Suzuki,Atsushi Watanabe,Manabu Abe,Fumihiro Sugiyama,Satoru Takahashi,Kenji Sakimura,Yu Hayashi,Qinghua Liu,Kazuhiko Kume,Shigeharu Wakana,Joseph S. Takahashi,Masashi Yanagisawa +38 more
TL;DR: Two dominant mutations that affect sleep and wakefulness are identified by using an electroencephalogram/electromyogram-based screen of randomly mutagenized mice and the role of SIK3 and NALCN in regulating the amount of NREMS and REMS is demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
The dragon lizard Pogona vitticeps has ZZ/ZW micro-sex chromosomes.
Tariq Ezaz,Alexander E. Quinn,Ikuo Miura,Stephen D. Sarre,Arthur Georges,Jennifer A. Marshall Graves +5 more
TL;DR: The bearded dragon, Pogona vitticeps, has differentiated previously unidentifable W and Z micro-sex chromosomes, the first to be demonstrated in an agamid lizard, implying that heterochromatinization of the heterogametic chromosome occurred during sex chromosome differentiation in this species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Germline mutation rates and the long-term phenotypic effects of mutation accumulation in wild-type laboratory mice and mutator mice
Arikuni Uchimura,Mayumi Higuchi,Yohei Minakuchi,Mizuki Ohno,Atsushi Toyoda,Asao Fujiyama,Ikuo Miura,Shigeharu Wakana,Jo Nishino,Takeshi Yagi +9 more
TL;DR: The impact of germline mutation rates on phenotypes in a mammalian population is revealed and fundamental information about mouse genetics is provided and the impact of mutation accumulation on phenotype is revealed.
Journal ArticleDOI
An Evolutionary Witness: the Frog Rana rugosa Underwent Change of Heterogametic Sex from XY Male to ZW Female
TL;DR: There is evidence that the male heterogametic sex determination of the frog Rana rugosa returned to its previous female state during speciation that occurred when the distribution range of the frogs expanded across Japan, quite recent in the phylogenetic time scale.
Journal ArticleDOI
A rapid rate of sex-chromosome turnover and non-random transitions in true frogs.
Daniel L. Jeffries,Guillaume Lavanchy,Roberto Sermier,Michael J. Sredl,Ikuo Miura,Amaël Borzée,Lisa N. Barrow,Daniele Canestrelli,Pierre-André Crochet,Christophe Dufresnes,Jinzhong Fu,Wen-Juan Ma,Constantino Macías Garcia,Karim Ghali,Alfredo G. Nicieza,Ryan P. O'Donnell,Nicolas Rodrigues,Antonio Romano,Iñigo Martínez-Solano,Ilona Stepanyan,Silvia Zumbach,Alan Brelsford,Nicolas Perrin +22 more
TL;DR: A very high rate of sex chromosome turnover in true frogs is shown, which may be driven by rapid mutation-load accumulation due to the low recombination rate in males, suggesting a key role for mutation- load accumulation in non-recombining genomic regions.
