TL;DR: Oral antibiotic therapy was noninferior to intravenous antibiotic therapy when used during the first 6 weeks for complex orthopedic infection, as assessed by treatment failure at 1 year after randomization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Arthroscopic subacromial decompression for subacromial shoulder pain (CSAW): a multicentre, pragmatic, parallel group, placebo-controlled, three-group, randomised surgical trial
David J Beard,Jonathan Rees,Jonathan Cook,Ines Rombach,Cushla D Cooper,Naomi Merritt,Beverly A. Shirkey,Jenny L Donovan,Stephen Gwilym,Julian Savulescu,Jane Moser,Alastair Gray,Marcus Jepson,Irene Tracey,Andrew Judge,Karolina Wartolowska,Andrew Carr +16 more
TL;DR: The findings question the value of this operation for subacromial shoulder pain and function, and this should be communicated to patients during the shared treatment decision-making process.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of placebo controls in the evaluation of surgery: systematic review
Karolina Wartolowska,Andrew Judge,Andrew Judge,Sally Hopewell,Gary S. Collins,Dean Bjf.,Ines Rombach,David Brindley,Julian Savulescu,David J Beard,Andrew Carr +10 more
TL;DR: Investigating whether placebo controls should be used in the evaluation of surgical interventions found a powerful, feasible way of showing the efficacy of surgical procedures and the risks of adverse effects associated with the placebo are small.
Journal ArticleDOI
Arthroscopic hip surgery compared with physiotherapy and activity modification for the treatment of symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement: multicentre randomised controlled trial.
Antony Palmer,Vandana Ayyar Gupta,Scott Fernquest,Ines Rombach,Susan J Dutton,Ramy Mansour,Simon M. Wood,Vikas Khanduja,T. C. B. Pollard,Andrew McCaskie,Karen Barker,Tony Andrade,Andrew Carr,David J Beard,David J Beard,Sion Glyn-Jones +15 more
TL;DR: Patients with symptomatic FAI referred to secondary or tertiary care achieve superior outcomes with arthroscopic hip surgery than with physiotherapy and activity modification, according to the primary outcome measure.
Journal ArticleDOI
The risks and benefits of glucocorticoid treatment for tendinopathy: a systematic review of the effects of local glucocorticoid on tendon.
TL;DR: It is clear that the local administration of glucocorticoid has significant negative effects on tendon cells in vitro, including reduced cell viability, cell proliferation and collagen synthesis, and the mechanical properties of tendon are significantly reduced.
