The present invention is a method and apparatus relating to manufacturing nanostructure patterns and components using molecular science. The method includes overlaying a multilayer organic molecule resist on at least a portion of a parent structure selectively deposited on a substrate, depositing a layer over the parent structure and in contact with at least a portion of the multilayer organic resist, and removing the multilayer organic molecule resist to leave a residual structure.

Molecular ruler for scaling down nanostructures

Three-dimensional (3D) structural information on many length scales is of central importance in biological research. Excellent methods exist to obtain structures of molecules at atomic, organelles at electron microscopic, and tissue at light-microscopic resolution. A gap exists, however, when 3D tissue structure needs to be reconstructed over hundreds of micrometers with a resolution sufficient to follow the thinnest cellular processes and to identify small organelles such as synaptic vesicles. Such 3D data are, however, essential to understand cellular networks that, particularly in the nervous system, need to be completely reconstructed throughout a substantial spatial volume. Here we demonstrate that datasets meeting these requirements can be obtained by automated block-face imaging combined with serial sectioning inside the chamber of a scanning electron microscope. Backscattering contrast is used to visualize the heavy-metal staining of tissue prepared using techniques that are routine for transmission electron microscopy. Low-vacuum (20–60 Pa H2O) conditions prevent charging of the uncoated block face. The resolution is sufficient to trace even the thinnest axons and to identify synapses. Stacks of several hundred sections, 50–70 nm thick, have been obtained at a lateral position jitter of typically under 10 nm. This opens the possibility of automatically obtaining the electron-microscope-level 3D datasets needed to completely reconstruct the connectivity of neuronal circuits.

Serial block−face scanning electron microscopy to reconstruct three−dimensional tissue nanostructure

Among various water purification and recycling technologies, adsorption is a fast, inexpensive and universal method. The development of low-cost adsorbents has led to the rapid growth of research interests in this field. The present protocol describes salient features of adsorption and details experimental methodologies for the development and characterization of low-cost adsorbents, water treatment and recycling using adsorption technology including batch processes and column operations. The protocol describes the development of inexpensive adsorbents from waste materials, which takes only 1-2 days, and an adsorption process taking 15-120 min for the removal of pollutants. The applications of batch and column processes are discussed, along with suggestions to make this technology more popular and applicable.

Advances in water treatment by adsorption technology

This paper gives a comprehensive review about the most recent progress in synthesis, characterization, fundamental understanding, and the performance of graphene and graphene oxide sponges. Practical applications are considered including use in composite materials, as the electrode materials for electrochemical sensors, as absorbers for both gases and liquids, and as electrode materials for devices involved in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Several advantages of both graphene and graphene oxide sponges such as three dimensional graphene networks, high surface area, high electro/thermo conductivities, high chemical/electrochemical stability, high flexibility and elasticity, and extremely high surface hydrophobicity are emphasized. To facilitate further research and development, the technical challenges are discussed, and several future research directions are also suggested in this paper.

One of the most important applications of a focused ion beam (FIB) workstation is preparing samples for transmission electron microscope (TEM) investigation. Samples must be uniformly thin to enable the analyzing beam of electrons to penetrate. The FIB enables not only the preparation of large, uniformly thick, sitespecific samples, but also the fabrication of lamellae used for TEM samples from composite samples consisting of inorganic and organic materials with very different properties. This article gives an overview of the variety of techniques that have been developed to prepare the final TEM specimen. The strengths of these methods as well as the problems, such as FIB-induced damage and Ga contamination, are illustrated with examples. Most recently, FIB-thinned lamellae were used to improve the spatial resolution of electron backscatter diffraction and energy-dispersive x-ray mapping. Examples are presented to illustrate the capabilities, difficulties, and future potential of FIB.

TEM Sample Preparation and FIB-Induced Damage

Spectral imaging in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer has the potential to be a powerful tool for chemical phase identification, but the large data sets have, in the past, proved too large to efficiently analyze. In the present work, we describe the application of a new automated, unbiased, multivariate statistical analysis technique to very large X-ray spectral image data sets. The method, based in part on principal components analysis, returns physically accurate (all positive) component spectra and images in a few minutes on a standard personal computer. The efficacy of the technique for microanalysis is illustrated by the analysis of complex multi-phase materials, particulates, a diffusion couple, and a single-pixel-detection problem.

Automated analysis of SEM X-ray spectral images: a powerful new microanalysis tool.

A simple and facile method to fabricate 3D graphene architectures is presented. Pyrolyzed photoresist films (PPF) can easily be patterned into a variety of 2D and 3D structures. We demonstrate how prestructured PPF can be chemically converted into hollow, interconnected 3D multilayered graphene structures having pore sizes around 500 nm. Electrodes formed from these structures exhibit excellent electrochemical properties including high surface area and steady-state mass transport profiles due to a unique combination of 3D pore structure and the intrinsic advantages of electron transport in graphene, which makes this material a promising candidate for microbattery and sensing applications.

Lithographically Defined Three-Dimensional Graphene Structures

The solidification reaction sequences of experimental superalloys containing systematic variations in Fe, Nb, Si, and C were studied using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and microstructural characterization techniques. The reaction sequences responsible for microstructural development were found to be similar to those expected in the Ni-Nb-C ternary system and commercial superalloys of comparable composition. The solute-rich interdendritic liquid generally exhibited two eutectic-type reactions at the terminal stages of solidification: L → (γ+NbC) and L → (γ+Laves). The Ni-base alloys with a high C/Nb ratio represented the only exception to this general solidification sequence. This group of alloys terminated solidification with the L → (γ + NbC) reaction and did not exhibit the γ/Laves constituent. At similar levels of solute elements (Nb, Si, and C), the Fe-base alloys always formed more of the γ/Laves eutectic-type constituent than the corresponding Ni-base alloys. Silicon additions also increased the amount of the γ/Laves constituent that formed in the assolidified microstructure, while C additions promoted formation of γ/NbC. The influence of Nb was dependent on the C content of the alloy. When the C content was low, Nb additions generally promoted formation of γ/Laves, while Nb additions to alloys with high C led to formation of the γ/NbC constituent. The results of this work are combined with quantitative analyses for developing γ-Nb-C pseudoternary solidification diagrams in a companion article.
