HLA and NK Cell Inhibitory Receptor Genes in Resolving Hepatitis C Virus Infection
Salim I. Khakoo,Chloe L. Thio,Maureen P. Martin,Collin Brooks,Xiaojiang Gao,Jacquie Astemborski,Jie Cheng,James J. Goedert,David Vlahov,Margaret W. Hilgartner,Steven T. Cox,Ann Margeret Little,Graeme J.M. Alexander,Matthew E. Cramp,Stephen J. O'Brien,William Rosenberg,David L. Thomas,Mary Carrington +17 more
TL;DR: The data strongly suggest that inhibitory NK cell interactions are important in determining antiviral immunity and that diminished inhibitory responses confer protection against HCV.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Natural History of Hepatitis C Virus Infection: Host, Viral, and Environmental Factors
David L. Thomas,Jacquie Astemborski,Rudra Rai,Frank A. Anania,Melody Schaeffer,Noya Galai,Karen R. Nolt,Kenrad E. Nelson,Steffanie A. Strathdee,Lisette Johnson,Oliver Laeyendecker,John K. Boitnott,Lucy E. Wilson,David Vlahov +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the incidence and determinants of viral clearance and end-stage liver disease (ESLD) among persons who acquired hepatitis C virus infection from injection drug use.
Journal ArticleDOI
A variant upstream of IFNL3 (IL28B) creating a new interferon gene IFNL4 is associated with impaired clearance of hepatitis C virus
Ludmila Prokunina-Olsson,Brian Muchmore,Wei Tang,Ruth M. Pfeiffer,Heiyoung Park,Harold Dickensheets,Dianna Hergott,Patricia Porter-Gill,Adam Mumy,Indu Kohaar,Sabrina Chen,Nathan Brand,McAnthony Tarway,Luyang Liu,Faruk Sheikh,Jacquie Astemborski,Herbert L. Bonkovsky,Brian R. Edlin,Brian R. Edlin,Charles D. Howell,Timothy R. Morgan,Timothy R. Morgan,David L. Thomas,Barbara Rehermann,Raymond P. Donnelly,Thomas R. O'Brien +25 more
TL;DR: RNA sequencing in primary human hepatocytes activated with synthetic double-stranded RNA to mimic HCV infection provides new insights into the genetic regulation of HCV clearance and its clinical management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Initial Plasma HIV-1 RNA Levels and Progression to AIDS in Women and Men
Timothy R. Sterling,David Vlahov,David Vlahov,Jacquie Astemborski,Donald R. Hoover,Joseph B. Margolick,Thomas C. Quinn,Thomas C. Quinn +7 more
TL;DR: Although the initial level of HIV-1 RNA was lower in women than in men, the rates of progression to AIDS were similar and treatment guidelines that are based on the viral load, rather than the CD4+ lymphocyte count, will lead to differences in eligibility for antiretroviral treatment according to sex.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence, incidence, and type-specific persistence of human papillomavirus in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive and HIV-negative women.
Linda Ahdieh,Robert S. Klein,Robert D. Burk,Susan Cu-Uvin,Paula Schuman,Ann Duerr,Mahboobeh Safaeian,Jacquie Astemborski,Richard W. Daniel,Keerti V. Shah +9 more
TL;DR: HIV infection and immunosuppression play an important role in modulating the natural history of HPV infection as well as risk factors for HPV persistence.
