TL;DR: Results of phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses show a single introduction of ZikV into the Americas, which is estimated to have occurred between May and December 2013, more than 12 months before the detection of ZIKV in Brazil.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergence and potential for spread of Chikungunya virus in Brazil
Márcio Roberto Teixeira Nunes,Nuno R. Faria,Janaina Mota de Vasconcelos,Nick Golding,Moritz U. G. Pybus,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos +22 more
TL;DR: It is estimated that, if Chikungunya virus becomes established in Brazil, transmission could occur in 94% of municipalities in the country and maps of the risk of importation of each strain of CHIKV in Brazil are provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Zika virus disrupts molecular fingerprinting of human neurospheres.
Patricia P. Garcez,Juliana M. Nascimento,Janaina Mota de Vasconcelos,Rodrigo Madeiro da Costa,Rodrigo Delvecchio,Pablo Trindade,Erick Correia Loiola,Luiza M. Higa,Juliana S. TL;DR: Altered alterations in human neurospheres derived from induced pluripotent stem cells infected with the strain of Zika virus that is circulating in Brazil are described and point to biological mechanisms implicated in brain malformations that can be exploited as therapeutic potential targets to mitigate it.
Journal ArticleDOI
Congenital Zika syndrome is associated with maternal protein malnutrition.

Vianez,Claudio Gustavo Barbeito,Patricia Cuervo,Maria Bellio,Amilcar Tanuri,Patricia P. Garcez +27 more
TL;DR: It is found that the combination of protein restriction and ZIKV infection leads to severe alterations of placental structure and embryonic body growth, with offspring displaying a reduction in neurogenesis and postnatal brain size.

TL;DR: Investigating candidate loci to SLE predisposition and evaluating the influence of ethnic ancestry in the disease risk and clinical phenotypic heterogeneity of lupus at onset found the African ancestry was associated with renal manifestations and European and Amerindian ancestries.
