Air pollution and lung cancer incidence in 17 European cohorts : Prospective analyses from the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE)
Ole Raaschou-Nielsen,Zorana Jovanovic Andersen,Rob Beelen,Evangelia Samoli,Massimo Stafoggia,Gudrun Weinmayr,Barbara Hoffmann,Paul Fischer,Mark J. Nieuwenhuijsen,Bert Brunekreef,Wei W. Xun,Klea Katsouyanni,Konstantina Dimakopoulou,Johan Nilsson Sommar,Bertil Forsberg,Lars Modig,Anna Oudin,Bente Oftedal,Per E. Schwarze,Per Nafstad,Per Nafstad,Ulf de Faire,Nancy L. TL;DR: The meta-analyses showed a statistically significant association between risk for lung cancer and PM10 and PM2·5, and no association between lungcancer and nitrogen oxides concentration or traffic intensity on the nearest street.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impacts on air pollution and health by changing commuting from car to bicycle.
Christer Johansson,Boel Lövenheim,Peter Schantz,Lina Wahlgren,Peter Almström,Anders Markstedt,Magnus Strömgren,Bertil Forsberg,Johan Nilsson Sommar +8 more
TL;DR: There is a very large potential for reducing emissions and exposure if all car drivers living within a distance corresponding to a maximum of a 30min bicycle ride to work would change to commuting by bicycle.
Journal ArticleDOI
Arterial Blood Pressure and Long-Term Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollution : An Analysis in the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE)
Kataryna B. Fuks,Gudrun Weinmayr,Maria Foraster,Julia Dratva,Regina Hampel,Danny Houthuijs,Bente Oftedal,Anna Oudin,Sviatlana Panasevich,Johanna Penell,Johan Nilsson Sommar,Mette Sørensen,Pekka Tiittanen,Kathrin Wolf,Wei W. Turunen,Paolo Vineis,Annette Peters,Barbara Hoffmann +58 more
TL;DR: In this first comprehensive meta-analysis of European population-based cohorts, a weak positive association of high residential traffic exposure with BP in nonmedicated participants is observed, and an elevated OR for prevalent hypertension is observed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-Term Exposure to Particulate Air Pollution, Black Carbon, and Their Source Components in Relation to Ischemic Heart Disease and Stroke
Petter Ljungman,Niklas Andersson,Leo Stockfelt,Eva Andersson,Johan Nilsson Sommar,Kristina Eneroth,Lars Gidhagen,Christer Johansson,Anton Lager,Anton Lager,Karin Leander,Peter Molnár,Nancy L. Pedersen,Debora Rizzuto,Annika Rosengren,David Segersson,Patrik Wennberg,Lars Barregard,Bertil Forsberg,Gerd Sallsten,Tom Bellander,Tom Bellander,Göran Pershagen,Göran Pershagen +23 more
TL;DR: Overall, few consistent associations were observed between the different air pollution measures and IHD or stroke incidence, however, long-term residential exposure to locally emitted BC from traffic exhaust was associated with stroke incidence.
Journal ArticleDOI
End-stage renal disease and low level exposure to lead, cadmium and mercury; a population-based, prospective nested case-referent study in Sweden
Johan Nilsson Sommar,Maria Svensson,Bodil Björ,Sölve Elmståhl,Göran Hallmans,Thomas Lundh,Staffan Schön,Staffan Skerfving,Ingvar A. Bergdahl +8 more
TL;DR: Erythrocyte lead is associated with end-stage renal disease but further studies are needed to evaluate causality and gender-specific analyses suggest potential differences in susceptibility or in exposure biomarker reliability.
